Brundle Stunned if Newey Doesn’t Join Another F1 Team: A Look into the Future of F1’s Design Maestro
Martin Brundle believes it would be surprising if Adrian Newey, known for his competitive nature, doesn't sign with another F1 team after leaving Red Bull.
Ex-Formula 1 racer and current commentator Martin Brundle expressed his astonishment if Adrian Newey were to depart from Red Bull without aligning with a different squad.
Newey, hailed as the top Formula 1 car designer ever, has successfully arranged to end his contract ahead of schedule. This agreement means he will leave Red Bull ahead of time next year, after spending almost 20 years with the team located in Milton Keynes.
The 65-year-old icon in design has hinted at the possibility of aligning with a different F1 team after leaving Red Bull.
Sky Sports F1 analyst Brundle is of the opinion that Newey is likely to engage in a new venture by the time the 2026 rule changes are implemented.
"Brundle expressed his belief on the Beyond the Grid podcast, suggesting, “I'm convinced he will. He's driven by competition. I believe he might find himself growing restless. The regulations set for 2026 seem to be tailor-made for Adrian.”
"This isn't to diminish the contributions of others, such as Pierre Wache, the Technical Director of Red Bull, along with many other intelligent individuals involved."
Claiming that a single individual can't have an impact is incorrect, yet I can assure you that Adrian, in his journey, nudged a few aspects and introduced some concepts that ultimately made a significant difference.
"It's essentially about the expertise, the savvy, and the intuition required, so it would be unexpected if he doesn't end up having some sort of association with a Formula 1 team in the future. Honestly, I'd be shocked."
Newey is strongly rumored to be considering a move to Ferrari, potentially teaming up with Lewis Hamilton, after having rejected offers from the Italian team on at least three different occasions throughout his career.
Inquiring about where Newey might head next, Brundle mentioned: "It requires significant financial and material resources to make use of Adrian Newey's talents. Putting him in an office without the necessary equipment and budget to implement his concepts is futile."
Every team is essentially saying, 'We're quite content as things stand, thank you'. Firstly, because there's a chance they won't secure him. And secondly, because they prefer not to disturb the harmony within their existing team setup.
"Undoubtedly, teams like Mercedes, Aston Martin, McLaren, and Ferrari will be eager and making efforts to secure him. It's a situation with dual benefits, as acquiring Adrian's expertise and talent means not only adding value to your team but also ensuring that competitors are deprived of his services. Therefore, it's expected that these teams will be fervently pursuing him. If they're not already doing so, they definitely ought to be."
