Brad Binder Battles Bad Luck: Brake Issues and Holeshot Drama Mark Challenging Indonesian MotoGP
Brad Binder experienced a challenging day marked by a brake leak, an incredible start, and successfully securing the holeshot. Reflecting on the events, he remarked, “What a day!” Binder acknowledged the difficulties, stating, "It was quite a troublesome day, but if things are bound to go wrong, I hope I've dealt with all of them now."
Brad Binder is optimistic that he experienced all his misfortune in just one day at the Indonesian MotoGP on Saturday.
“What an eventful day!” exclaimed Binder. “The free practice session went well. We faced numerous issues in Sector 2 yesterday, but I made significant improvements there today, which was fantastic.”
However, trouble started for the Red Bull KTM rider during the qualifying session.
During his initial lap, the South African encountered an issue with his rear brake protector on his subsequent attempt, which prevented him from enhancing his performance and resulted in him starting 19th on the grid.
Brad Binder explained his predicament, stating, "I had a minor technical problem which caused my rear brake to fail. It was clearly leaking and affected the rear tire," he said. "I returned to the pits, switched bikes, went back out, and then received the checkered flag. That sums up my qualifying session."
Binder experienced an outstanding start in the Sprint race, but struggled to brake sufficiently to disengage the holeshot device at both the first and second turns.
Binder explained that he was surrounded by so many people that he couldn’t apply the front brake hard enough to unclip in the first turn. The same situation occurred in the second turn, where the crowd prevented him from braking hard.
"I navigated all the other corners until I reached turn 10, but when I tried to brake there, the shaking had caused them to fail. As a result, I went straight through turn 10, managed to unclip at turn 11, and had to continue from that point. However, by then, the person ahead of me had already gained a lead of about 3 seconds."
"It was quite a troublesome day, but if anything can go awry, I hope I have dealt with it all. And if there's more to come, let it happen today so we can start anew tomorrow!"
Binder crossed the finish line in 13th position, achieving his quickest lap time of 1 minute 30.723 seconds (+0.534 seconds) on his 13th and last lap.
"In the final lap, I recorded my fastest time of the race and was close to the lead. I believe we could have had a strong performance today. However, that's how it goes sometimes; things don't always work out. I'm eager to change our fortunes in the next race."
Pedro Acosta was the leading KTM rider, finishing in sixth place, while Jack Miller, Binder's teammate, secured the 13th position.
Binder begins Sunday’s grand prix with a narrow lead of six points over his future team-mate Acosta, as they compete for fifth place and the best non-Ducati rider in the world championship.
