On Thursday, BMW revealed that van der Linde would be taking over Augusto Farfus's spot in their full-season DTM roster for 2019.
Van der Linde expressed his amazement, saying that participating in the Young Driver Test with the BMW M4 DTM was a dream come true for him, and securing a spot on the team for 2019 is unbelievable.
"I take great pride in following in my father's footsteps with a renowned car manufacturer that is also well-loved in my home country. Additionally, I am honored to be the first South African to compete in the DTM. I would like to express my gratitude to BMW Motorsport for their confidence in me."
BMW's head of motorsport, Jens Marquardt, commented, "We are thrilled to welcome another promising young driver to our squad. Sheldon left a remarkable impression when he drove the BMW M4 DTM during the Young Driver Test in mid-December."
Before this, we closely monitored his progress in GT racing. Sheldon's quickness and adaptability make him an ideal fit for our BMW M Motorsport team. I am sure he will adjust swiftly to the DTM.
Van der Linde will be part of BMW's DTM team for the 2019 season, alongside Timo Glock, Philipp Eng, Marco Wittmann, Joel Eriksson, and Bruno Spengler. The new season is scheduled to kick off at Hockenheim on May 4.
