Bastianini Clarifies Controversial Move in Emilia Romagna GP, Amid Mixed Reactions from Martin and Marquez
Enea Bastianini Explains His Off-Track Maneuver During Overtake of Jorge Martin
Enea Bastianini, Jorge Martin, and Marc Marquez Address Misano Incident Inquiry
Enea Bastianini has provided an explanation for veering off the course during his contentious final lap pass on Jorge Martin in the MotoGP Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
The last-minute maneuver at Turn 4 by Ducati's Bastianini to surpass Martin for first place in last Sunday's Misano race has sparked intense discussion ever since.
Bastianini maneuvered his Ducati to overtake Pramac's Martin on the inside, resulting in minor contact between the two and causing Martin to veer off course significantly, while Bastianini too went past the track boundary.
The officials did not take any measures regarding the incident, though they reportedly investigated it. Nonetheless, they have not yet officially acknowledged doing so.
Views on the issue were divided, as certain riders believed that since Bastianini also veered off the track, he ought to have been required to relinquish his position.
Before the Indonesian Grand Prix this weekend, the victor of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix mentioned that he would have successfully navigated the turn if he hadn't checked to see whether Martin had fallen off his bike.
"Actually, it doesn't surprise me, since I also veered off course because I looked back to check on Jorge after noticing signs of a crash," he explained when questioned about his astonishment at the reaction the overtaking move has sparked.
"I initially believed he had an accident. However, it turns out he simply missed the mark. Had that incident not occurred, I would have been right on target, and I stand by my initial judgment as being the right one."
Martin, the frontrunner in the championship, maintains his initial stance on the incident but expresses his respect for the adjudicators' verdict.
"He stated, 'To me, it's pointless to continue discussing what's already happened.'"
"I don't fully agree because I believe it exceeded what was acceptable. Ultimately, I must accept the ruling of the stewards. Therefore, congratulations to Enea, and I'll make an effort here."
Marc Marquez stood out as the key figure advocating for a penalty against Bastianini last Sunday, and when questioned about his stance again on Thursday in Lombok, he indicated that his views remained unchanged.
"The Gresini rider stated, 'I had no involvement. My stance on the matter has already been expressed.'"
