Alpine Stands by Briatore’s Controversial Return: A Future-Focused Strategy Amid ‘Crashgate’ Shadows
Alpine leader Bruno Famin stands by the decision to bring Flavio Briatore back to the Formula 1 team, despite facing questions over Briatore's involvement in the 'Crashgate' controversy.
Bruno Famin has supported Alpine's choice to bring back Flavio Briatore, 15 years following his permanent expulsion from F1 due to his involvement in the 'Crashgate' controversy.
At the age of 74, he had to step down from his position at the former Renault team in 2009 due to his role in the scandalous manipulation of the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix.
Nelson Piquet Jr was told to intentionally cause a crash to benefit his teammate, Fernando Alonso, who ultimately secured the victory in the race.
Initially, Briatore received a permanent expulsion from Formula 1 by the sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, but a court in France reversed this decision in 2010.
On Friday, ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, Famin was questioned about Briatore coming back as executive advisor to the Alpine team and emphasized that he is focusing on the future, not dwelling on the past.
"The past doesn't particularly bother me," Famin remarked, in response to inquiries regarding his ease with the comeback of a formerly banned individual to F1.
"My focus is constantly on the future, considering how we can improve and enhance our team. That's truly our aim."
From my perspective, bringing Flavio on board as a team advisor presents an invaluable chance to leverage his expertise. His profound understanding of Formula 1, coupled with his extensive network, will undoubtedly aid in accelerating and enhancing our team's development. That sums it up.
When further questioned about his rationale for the decision, Famin responded, "There exists a distinct objective to rapidly and significantly enhance the team's competitive edge."
"We're seeking robust backing, and we're thrilled to welcome Davide Sanchez as our technical director. It's a great chance, and we've managed to capitalize on it swiftly."
"The goal with Flavio is to enhance the team's performance quickly, utilizing his expertise, connections, and influence. He is considered a valuable resource, and we are leveraging every asset we have to strengthen the team," stated the Mercedes leader, Toto Wolff. Similarly, Ferrari's head, Frederic Vasseur, supported Briatore's comeback.
"Wolff expressed the belief that there should be an opportunity to recuperate from the circumstances."
I've recognized Flavio as an incredibly intelligent entrepreneur. His expertise in Formula 1 is extensive. All the advice I've received from him during the more than a decade of closer contact and our amicable association has, in one way or another, been beneficial.
"Bruno highlighted the immense value of four decades in Formula 1, a sentiment I share. I believe everyone should have the chance to make a return. Personally, the addition of another intelligent individual to Alpine, someone who can distill complexity and bring a straightforward approach, is undoubtedly advantageous for where Alpine currently stands."
In a recent statement, Vasseur remarked, "On the whole, it seems to be a positive progression for Alpine, and ultimately, it benefits Formula 1 if Alpine is re-entering the competition. We're familiar with what happened. And it seems he has faced the consequences of that. If he's now given the opportunity to return, then he should be able to make a comeback."
