Mercedes Escalates Anonymous ‘Sabotage’ Accusations Against Lewis Hamilton to Police Amidst Online Abuse Concerns
Mercedes has contacted law enforcement to look into a mysterious email that claims the team has engaged in 'sabotage' and put Lewis Hamilton's safety at risk, denouncing the actions of "lunatics."
Toto Wolff, the team principal at Mercedes F1, has reported to authorities that he received an undisclosed email alleging that the team deliberately undermined Lewis Hamilton's performance.
On June 10, the day following the Canadian Grand Prix, an unidentified individual alleging to be part of the Mercedes team dispatched an email. This person charged Mercedes with deliberately undermining Hamilton's efforts and purportedly jeopardizing the life of the seven-time world champion.
Mercedes asserts that the letter was not sent by someone affiliated with their team, but rather by an upset fan of Hamilton who created a fake email address for this purpose.
"Wolff clarified that the emails did not originate from a team member. He expressed concern over receiving a large volume of emails, finding it particularly distressing when they include mentions of death and similar topics.
In this specific instance, I have directed a thorough investigation by the police, including tracing the IP address and looking into the phone number, because we must put an end to such online harassment. It's unacceptable for individuals to use their phones or computers as shields while they target teams or drivers with abuse.
"I'm unsure of the bizarre theories some people have concocted. Lewis has been a member of our team for a dozen years; we've built a friendship, there's mutual trust, and our goal is to succeed…and conclude this chapter on a positive note, honoring our partnership."
“If you find that hard to accept, then at least trust that our goal is to clinch the constructors world championship, and that means ensuring victories for both vehicles. To those out there who think this is crazy, perhaps it’s time to consult a psychiatrist.”
Hamilton, set to depart from Mercedes for Ferrari the following year, emphasized before the Spanish Grand Prix that he hadn't viewed the email in question but stood up for his teammate George Russell, who has faced a wave of online hostility and criticism.
"Hamilton mentioned, “I honestly had no idea that George was facing any sort of negativity. He has consistently given his all every weekend and has been a solid contributor to the team's efforts, so there's absolutely no room to criticize him.”
"Undoubtedly, there are always areas within a team that can see improvement, and this is achieved through ongoing dialogue and communication, which is something we are diligently focusing on."
"However, we're all part of the same team, striving together and aiming to end on a positive note. It's something we owe to our enduring partnership."
What did the email contain?
As reported by The Daily Mail, which has viewed the email, its subject read 'A possible death sentence for Lewis’.
The message conveyed in the email expressed discontent within the team, highlighting a deliberate undermining of Lewis's performance through tactics affecting his vehicle, tire planning, race approach, and mental well-being. It also criticized the inappropriate behavior demonstrated by Toto, George, whom it referred to affectionately, and some others towards him.
Toto is acting out of spite, similar to a betrayed spouse, and has ceased communication with Lewis. However, he is actively seeking ways to retaliate. Lewis finds himself ostracized, and there are some deceitful actions happening that the public should know about.
"Inquire and the facts will emerge. Everything is documented in the data. Apart from Bono (Peter Bonnington, Hamilton's race strategist) and those who are fans of Lewis, there are individuals pursuing a path that could potentially endanger Lewis, other racers, and even bystanders. Adopting a strategy involving cold tires is tantamount to signing a death certificate.
"Toto and George, be cautious and ensure accuracy. Not everyone is ready to engage in your unjust and unprofessional efforts to undermine Lewis for personal satisfaction."
