Alonso Dispels Newey Signing Rumours as Aston Martin Faces Uphill Battle
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement
"I don't believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso asserts that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than merely "one individual," despite ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggested that Aston Martin might reveal the acquisition of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, the soon-to-depart chief technology officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his role early next year and will then be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation has intensified lately that Aston Martin could be his future team, while rumors of him moving to Ferrari have diminished.
In Monza, Alonso remarked, "There are still just rumors, and I believe it's not solely one person's responsibility to make things right."
"It's primarily about our current situation and our production efforts. It's crucial to identify what's progressing positively and what's not, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Next year, Newey's availability could enable him to supervise the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and extended Alonso's contract through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
In 2025, Aston Martin may focus on progress, gearing up for a more aggressive push in 2026.
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We are relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are doing our utmost each weekend.”
“During a weekend filled with inspiration, such as this one for me, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous.
Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently finished races within a tight margin of two or three seconds, either ahead or behind each other. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better, feeling satisfied with the car and pushing it perhaps more than 100%. This effort earned me an 11th place finish.
"Yes, it's frustrating. We must remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being positioned behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull indicates that we need to elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, saying, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from finishing last to securing a podium spot in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
“Similarly, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the initial four races, we were on par with them, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses.”
However, it seems improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is insufficient until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance in Monza was lacking. The results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also unsatisfactory."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"This is our strategy. The team knows what's going on. Everyone is giving their all. So, we stay together and continue to strive. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly got two, and that's the challenge we face."
