Alex Marquez's ecstatic response to being on the podium with his brother
Alex Marquez expressed his happiness about standing on the podium alongside his brother Marc Marquez at the German MotoGP.
Jorge Martin lost control and crashed while leading the race, which handed the win and the advantage in the championship to Pecco Bagnaia at the Sachsenring on Sunday.
Due to Martin's accident, Marc moved up to second place, which allowed Alex to secure a spot on the podium.
2024 German MotoGP, Sachsenring – Race Outcomes
The Gresini Ducati team had a lively celebration after the Marquez brothers, who are their riders, both secured podium finishes.
An excited Alex shared with TNT Sports his experience of competing with the leaders in Germany: "It was challenging to have both the front and rear tires at the optimal moment."
"I noticed Marc had a zero score and thought, 'Oh no, what should I do now?'"
“Afterwards, when I witnessed Martin's accident, I felt deeply sorry for him, and I started trembling.”
"I noticed that Franco Morbidelli blocked Enea Bastianini, which worked out in our favor."
The tussle between factory Ducati racer Bastianini and Pramac’s Morbidelli provided Alex with the added motivation to join his brother on the podium.
This resulted in the two Gresini riders on GP23 bikes outperforming Bastianini and Morbidelli, who were riding GP24 bikes.
Alex recounted his race, saying, "Everyone was focused on conserving their tyres. The entire lap was about managing them and avoiding excessive wear on the rear tyre."
"Subsequently, I found it challenging to pass Morbidelli."
He commented on the differences between the bikes, noting, "They excel in certain aspects, particularly in braking and corner entry, which are crucial for overtaking…"
Alex commented later: "It turned out to be an excellent day for us. Securing a podium finish was a pleasant surprise for me. Earlier, I mentioned that finishing in seventh place was our realistic goal since we lacked the speed."
"However, the adjustments we implemented proved to be very effective."
"I was falling behind significantly with Franco Morbidelli. I couldn't catch the draft from Pecco."
“I’m glad to be on the podium with Marc. However, when Jorge had his accident, I was trembling. I couldn’t comprehend what had happened.”
“I kept an eye on the large display to see Enea's position because we are aware that he's incredibly quick in the final laps. I aimed to maintain control until the finish since my tires were pushed to their limits.”
Following his most notable performance of the season, Alex was requested to rate his overall season on a scale of 1 to 10.
"Yesterday, I would have rated it a 6," he remarked. "With today's podium finish, I'd give it a 6.5!"
"We lacked speed at the start of the season, except in Jerez. Our race pace didn't meet the required standards."
"Today's performance had a strong pace. We’re optimistic about maintaining this speed and improving our situation moving forward."
The German MotoGP marked Alex’s third time on the podium since he became part of the Gresini team.
In the previous year, he secured third place in Argentina and finished as the runner-up in Malaysia. Additionally, he claimed victory in the sprint races held in Malaysia and Silverstone.
This year, he had to wait until the Sachsenring race to get back on the podium, despite having his respected brother join him in the Gresini team garage.
