Alex Albon Laments ‘Painfully Slow’ Monaco GP, Jokes About Trading F1 Car for Vespa
Alex Albon might have swapped his Williams F1 vehicle for a Vespa during the agonizingly sluggish Monaco GP
Alex Albon expressed his irritation over the Monaco Grand Prix being governed by deliberate pacing.
Alex Albon humorously suggested that he might as well have traded his Williams Formula 1 vehicle for his Vespa during the Monaco Grand Prix, given the race's notably leisurely speed.
Albon secured his and Williams' initial points of the season with a solid performance, finishing ninth right after Yuki Tsunoda. However, despite the favorable outcome, he was disappointed by being trapped behind the Red Bull driver for 78 laps.
The racer of British-Thai descent expressed frustration over Tsunoda's – and many others in the race's – slow pace.
"Albon expressed his frustration, noting that it was bothersome due to his high speed. 'I'm okay with controlling [the speed], but there's no need for this level of moderation,' he stated."
"He was overseeing a lot, and I thought to myself, I could just hop on my Vespa and zip around this place. The pace was incredibly sluggish. It was excruciating."
Maintaining concentration becomes challenging when moving at such a slow pace because you're far from reaching any boundaries or limits.
"He totally sped away at the finish line. It made me think, we could have been doing this all along! Yet, he chose not to…"
Albon remarked, “It might have been somewhat uneventful. I hoped for a more exciting race, a better experience, to share how we achieved our initial points.
“I'm happy with that result. Finishing in ninth place is a solid outcome for us. It gets us on the scoreboard and sets a positive pace for the upcoming races. Last season, it took us some time to earn points, but once we did, we truly found our rhythm. So, there's no reason we can't repeat that success.”
"Clearly, we've made progress with the vehicle, reducing its weight, introducing minor improvements, and it's yielding results."
Tsunoda, clarifying that he was merely adhering to the plan his team had set for him, conceded that he found it unenjoyable to restrain his speed.
"Tsunoda stated, "It's essential for me to adhere to the strategy we've outlined. At times, I needed to reduce my speed to prevent the trailing cars from taking a pitstop or ensuring they were unable to gain an advantage by undercutting us."
As a driver, it was quite exasperating, particularly knowing that we had significant speed yet to unleash. However, we must adhere to the team's directives.
"The sensation isn't pleasant, but we had a conversation about it prior to the race, and honestly, I'm pleased with my actions, especially with not overworking the tyres."
