Adrian Newey’s Aston Martin Move: A Magnet for Top F1 Talent Amid Verstappen Rumors
Aston Martin's appeal enhanced with Adrian Newey amidst speculation about Max Verstappen
“Our appeal to drivers has increased…”
Mike Krack believes that Adrian Newey joining the Aston Martin Formula 1 team enhances its appeal to drivers.
On Tuesday, ahead of the weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Aston revealed they have secured a contract with famed designer Newey for 2025, a deal reportedly valued at around £30 million annually.
This action is taken as Formula 1 prepares for a new set of rules starting in 2026, with Newey playing a key role in ensuring Red Bull quickly adapts to the latest series of vehicles introduced in 2022.
Aston Martin's recruitment of Newey is seen as an immediate impact move as the team aims to climb back into the leading pack after falling behind in 2024. This acquisition is considered the first step in their strategy to attract a top-tier driver in the near future.
On Thursday in Baku, team leader Krack left the possibility open for three-time world champion Max Verstappen to join the team at some point, stating, "the door is always open."
Speaking to Sky F1 on Friday, when inquired whether Newey could serve as a promotional figure for a driver such as Verstappen, Krack responded, "To begin with, I believe the drivers are not an issue for us.
"Our vehicle is underperforming, and addressing this issue is our primary objective as a group."
Having self-assurance can aid in this matter, though it doesn't come effortlessly.
"Simply signing someone doesn't guarantee that everything turns rosy."
"It's essential to put in the effort and ensure this framework functions effectively, optimizing it primarily from the standpoint of roles and responsibilities. Then, like any other team, dedication and hard work are non-negotiable."
"Following that, I believe there's an opportunity for us to succeed. However, initially, it's imperative that we complete our preparatory work, ensuring responsibilities are appropriately distributed and that there's collective motivation."
"Many young individuals are expected to come on board, drawn by the inspiration they find in Adrian."
"In my opinion, our team has become significantly more appealing overall. We now have greater allure for partners, drivers, and engineers alike. It's exciting."
Aston is expected to maintain its current lineup of drivers until at least 2026, as Fernando Alonso has committed to the team through that year. Lance Stroll, whose father Lawrence is the team owner, is secured in his position until 2025, with the possibility of extending further.
