Yellow Flag Woes: Lando Norris’ F1 Title Hopes Take a Hit with Q1 Exit in Azerbaijan
"Out of Options" – Lando Norris Faces Major Setback in F1 Title Bid with Surprising Q1 Elimination
Lando Norris comments on a significant hit to his F1 championship hopes at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Lando Norris expressed regret over an untimely yellow flag during Q1 that compelled him to ease off, resulting in his early elimination from F1 qualifying at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Norris is set to begin Sunday’s race from the 17th position on the grid after experiencing his first Q1 elimination since the Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2023.
The British racer appeared to be on track to easily advance to Q2, but had to ease off because of the sluggish Esteban Ocon.
A yellow flag was momentarily displayed, causing Norris to slow down for a moment because of Ocon's vehicle.
Even though Ocon was entirely away from the racing line, it still disrupted Norris' lap.
Looking back at the qualifying session, Norris commented, "Everyone else had the chance to complete their second laps, but I couldn't. I believe it was Ocon; I had to slow down."
McLaren showed strong performance during the qualifying session, with Oscar Piastri earning a spot in second place on the grid, just behind Charles Leclerc.
Norris will be thankful that his chief competitor for the title, Max Verstappen, ended up in sixth place on the starting grid.
Anticipating Sunday's race, Norris commented, "I suppose I'll need to remain hopeful. It's the situation we're in, but with a lengthy race ahead, we do have a reserve of good tyres."
"I'll make an effort to move ahead and see what we can achieve tomorrow. I haven't given that much thought yet."
"I remain optimistic about achieving a favorable outcome. The car has great speed, and during my lap, I could have comfortably secured second place. It's frustrating, but there's nothing I can change now."
Norris' chances for the title have taken a significant hit, as McLaren announced before the weekend that they would be supporting him instead of Piastri.
The choice follows Piastri's move past his teammate Norris during the first lap of the Italian Grand Prix.
Norris was taken by surprise when he was overtaken by Leclerc on the first lap at Monza.
