Charles Leclerc Clinches Pole in Baku as Lando Norris Faces Qualifying Disaster
Charles Leclerc secures pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, while Lando Norris faces a disappointing exit in Q1, reports Lewis Larkam from Baku.
Charles Leclerc secured the top spot for the F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, whereas Lando Norris faced a disastrous qualifying session and will begin the race from 17th place.
Ferrari's driver, Leclerc, delivered an impressive performance to finish 0.321 seconds ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri, achieving his fourth straight pole position on the Baku circuit.
Piastri's late surge prevented Ferrari from securing both top spots, moving Carlos Sainz to third place. Sergio Perez managed to outqualify his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen for the first time this season, taking fourth position.
The standout moment from the qualifying session was Norris's surprising exit in Q1. An error at Turn 16 dashed his hopes of advancing further in the qualifiers, leaving him in 17th place and significantly hurting his championship aspirations.
The 24-year-old British racer entered the weekend trailing Verstappen by 62 points, aware that McLaren would prioritize their backing for him to enhance his championship prospects.
With Norris beginning the race from the 17th position, he is at a disadvantage for Sunday's race and recognizes that he is very likely to fall behind his key competitor for the title, Verstappen.
Current world champion Verstappen clocked the sixth fastest time, positioned between Mercedes drivers George Russell, who was fifth, and Lewis Hamilton, who secured seventh place.
Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso secured the eighth position, whereas Franco Colapinto impressed many with an exceptional performance in qualifying during only his second F1 race after being elevated from F2 to take over from Logan Sargeant.
A 21-year-old racer from Argentina secured the ninth-fastest time, outperforming his Williams teammate Alex Albon. In an unusual incident, Albon was released from the pit area with a cooling fan mistakenly left on his car just before his last attempt in Q3.
During his inaugural full grand prix weekend, Oliver Bearman managed to outpace his Haas teammate Nico Hulkenberg in qualifying, securing an impressive 11th place. This mirrors the position he achieved when he made his F1 debut for Ferrari in Saudi Arabia.
Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda secured the 12th position, followed by Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Nico Hulkenberg. Meanwhile, Lance Stroll couldn't make it to Q3 alongside his Aston Martin teammate Fernando Alonso, finishing with a time that placed him in 15th.
Starting at the rear of the grid alongside Norris is Daniel Ricciardo from Red Bull in 16th place. Also towards the back are Sauber teammates Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou, positioned in 18th and 19th respectively, and Esteban Ocon from Alpine, who had a collision with the wall.
