Williams Denies Rumours of Exit Clause in Carlos Sainz’s F1 Contract Amidst Multi-Year Deal Signing
Williams dismisses rumors of an 'exit clause' in Carlos Sainz's Formula 1 contract.
Williams has denied the speculation that Carlos Sainz's F1 contract contains a unique exit clause.
Williams has dismissed claims that Carlos Sainz’s Formula 1 contract features a specific exit clause enabling him to join Mercedes or Red Bull.
After months of rumors, Williams has officially confirmed that Ferrari's departing driver, Sainz, will be joining them on a multi-year contract starting in 2025.
Carlos Sainz took several months to consider proposals from Sauber/Audi and Alpine, but eventually decided to join Williams. It was also rumored that he was leaving room for potential opportunities at Red Bull or Mercedes.
Reports have surfaced in various media sources suggesting that Sainz sought to include an exit clause in his contract with Williams. This clause would allow him to switch to Mercedes or Red Bull should either team express interest in him.
According to the German outlet F1-Insider, Sainz's contract, valued at €10 million, contained a clause that might have prevented him from ever competing for Williams.
However, James Vowles, the team principal of Williams, refuted these claims.
On Tuesday, Vowles informed the media, including Crash.net, that exactly 10 individuals worldwide are aware of the contents of the contract's interior.
"I assure you, none of the participants on this call are it, nobody in this company is it, especially those around me right now. Only the Carlos group and I are aware of what's inside. Any information you find online is mere conjecture, and that's all."
Carlos himself emphasized that the agreement extends through 2025, 2026, and further into the future. He wanted to make it unmistakably clear to everyone, both to you and to the global audience, that he is dedicated to this commitment and this is where he intends to stay.
Sainz is set to take Logan Sargeant's place and join Alex Albon as his new teammate, finalizing Williams' driver roster for the 2025 season.
"I genuinely have faith in our current efforts, the path we're on, and the reasons for its eventual success," Vowles stated. "I also have similar confidence in Carlos – he's the person who can make a significant impact."
“My interest isn’t solely on his speed in the car. I’m also paying attention to his character and the people around him.”
"This group includes Carlos, his manager, and his father. Carlos's father shares his son's commitment to performance and is quite a remarkable individual. Together, they form a cohesive unit, which is exactly what we need at Williams. I believe they are an ideal match for us."
“I conveyed those precise words to them throughout the entire duration of this journey.”
