Why Mercedes Chose Stability Over Star Power: Toto Wolff on Passing Up Adrian Newey for F1 Design
Toto Wolff clarifies Mercedes' decision not to pursue renowned F1 designer Adrian Newey.
Toto Wolff sheds light on why Mercedes chose not to hire the iconic F1 designer Adrian Newey.
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff stated that he did not attempt to recruit renowned F1 designer Adrian Newey, expressing confidence in the existing technical team.
Before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Aston Martin announced that famous Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey would become their managing technical partner in March 2025, after leaving Red Bull.
Adrian Newey's choice to depart from Red Bull ignited a competitive scramble among teams to hire the 65-year-old, widely regarded as the best car designer in Formula 1 history, with a record of 25 world championships under his belt.
Newey was strongly associated with Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren, and Williams before he eventually signed with Aston Martin.
When questioned about whether Newey was genuinely considered by Mercedes, Wolff responded, "I believe every team has probably given it some consideration."
"James Allison, the technical director at Mercedes, and I talked it over, explored the details, and ultimately decided that we're confident in our current setup and want to maintain it."
"While we respect Newey, we decided not to pursue that opportunity because we had confidence in our team at that time."
Wolff expressed his hope that Newey joining Aston Martin will enhance the competitiveness of Formula 1 even further.
Wolff mentioned that Adrian's history in Formula 1 is impressive on its own.
"A highly skilled designer, arguably the top in Formula 1 based on statistics, paired with Andy Cowell—whom I regard as one of the most effective leaders across any field—could create a formidable team if they manage to collaborate successfully."
"It's positive. Having more teams competing at the front makes the race more exciting for fans. From a spectator's perspective, today's race was fantastic, even though I wish we had been up there in the lead."
"At this point, I believe there are four contenders vying for the drivers' world championship. Additionally, McLaren has surged ahead to lead the constructors' standings today – who could have imagined that scenario five months ago?"
"It would be amazing if a prestigious team like Aston Martin could join the front-runners."
