Whispers In The Paddock: Eddie Jordan Hints Max Verstappen Could Join Mercedes Amid 2026 F1 Rule Changes
Sources indicate that Max Verstappen is expected to join Mercedes in 2026. The belief is that Mercedes will have a competitive edge in 2026, which is why many are eager to be part of the team.
Eddie Jordan claims to have information suggesting that Max Verstappen will join Mercedes in 2026.
Toto Wolff openly expressed his desire to bring the Red Bull driver to Mercedes to take over for Lewis Hamilton, who is heading to Ferrari.
However, Verstappen has reaffirmed his loyalty to Red Bull, while Mercedes is anticipated to bring Kimi Antonelli on board to replace Hamilton next year.
Former Formula 1 team principal Eddie Jordan believes that Max Verstappen will remain with Red Bull Racing for the time being.
"Yes, for 2025," he mentioned on his Formula For Success podcast.
"In 2025, I predict Max will be the victor. This will be true in both 2024 and 2025."
In 2026, new regulations for Formula 1 will come into effect, offering each manufacturer an opportunity to start anew and potentially emerge as the leading team in the sport.
Jordan thinks that Mercedes can gain an advantage over their competitors with the new regulations in place.
He mentioned in confidence that Verstappen might be drawn to the top-performing engine under the 2026 regulations.
"Mercedes possesses expertise in their engine division and a deep comprehension of converting energy from battery packs. This will result in an extremely powerful engine," Jordan stated.
"I believe Mercedes will be powerful in 2026, which is why individuals should – and will – hurry to join them."
"The question I want you to ask me is: who do I think will be at Mercedes in 2026?"
"Based on what I've been told, Max…"
At the beginning of this year, amidst the chaos at Red Bull, Mercedes showed interest in Verstappen for the upcoming season.
The turmoil appears to have subsided, and there is no longer any indication that Verstappen will leave next year.
Antonelli, a young driver currently in his first Formula 2 season, is anticipated to take Hamilton's place at Mercedes in 2025.
However, a year later, when the sport undergoes major changes because of new rules, can Verstappen realistically request a transfer to Mercedes?
