Verstappen’s Triumph and Ratings Overview: Unveiling the Mastery Behind the 2024 Emilia Romagna GP Performances
Emilia Romagna Grand Prix evaluations: Max Verstappen demonstrates it's more than just the vehicle's merit
Crash.net's Formula 1 pilot assessments for the 2024 Emilia Romagna GP.
Max Verstappen – 10
Max Verstappen demonstrated his top-tier driving skills in Formula 1 during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, showcasing why he stands out as the premier driver in the sport at the moment. Despite McLaren having a slight advantage in single-lap speed at Imola, it was Verstappen who secured the pole position. The narrative didn’t change much in the race; Red Bull had the upper hand when it came to performance on medium tires, whereas McLaren showed strength with the hard tires.
Lando Norris – 9
Lando Norris had an impressive performance this weekend, crossing the finish line merely 0.7 seconds after Verstappen. His score has been slightly reduced due to being outperformed in the qualifying round by Piastri.
Charles Leclerc – 9
Charles Leclerc maintains his impressive streak, securing a spot in the top four in all seven races thus far. Despite Ferrari seeming slightly off the pace of the leading two teams, Leclerc managed to clinch third place.
Oscar Piastri – 8
Oscar Piastri's hopes for a podium finish were dashed when he received a three-place grid penalty for obstructing Kevin Magnussen during the qualifying rounds. Despite this setback, he was able to climb up one position in the actual race, surpassing Carlos Sainz during the pit stop sequence.
Carlos Sainz – 7.5
Sainz seemed slightly slower than his teammate Leclerc at the Imola race. A better finish in fourth place might have been possible if Ferrari had reacted more swiftly to Piastri's pit stop.
Lewis Hamilton – 7.5
Despite Lewis Hamilton's less impressive qualifying runs, it's difficult to fault his race day efforts. Although he spent a significant portion of the race trailing behind George Russell, it's probable that he would have ended up in front of his teammate even if Russell hadn't gone in for a second pit stop.
George Russell – 7.5
Russell put on a commendable performance during qualifying, nearly matching the pace of the second Ferrari by just a tenth. Although Hamilton appeared to have a superior race rhythm, especially in terms of tyre wear, it led to Russell needing an additional pit stop.
Sergio Perez experienced a challenging weekend, failing to advance beyond Q2. His struggles continued into the race, where he managed only an eighth-place finish.
Lance Stroll – 7
Stroll had a smooth outing with Aston Martin, managing to qualify ahead of his teammate Fernando Alonso, who faced significant challenges. Astute strategic decisions by the Aston Martin team helped him advance positions, showcasing solid overtaking maneuvers along the way.
Yuki Tsunoda Scores an 8
Tsunoda delivered yet another commendable performance, shining in the qualifiers by wedging himself between the two Mercedes drivers. However, a slow off the mark beginning and encountering congestion from Logan Sargeant slowed him down.
Nico Hulkenberg – 7.5
Nico Hulkenberg had another impressive weekend, making it into Q3 once more. However, he fell out of the points race as Stroll made a comeback through the ranks.
Kevin Magnussen – 6.5
Magnussen's hopes for a successful weekend were dashed after Piastri obstructed him, causing his early elimination in Q1. Despite this setback, the Danish driver battled valiantly through the pack to secure a commendable finish.
Daniel Ricciardo – 6.5
Ricciardo remains behind his teammate Tsunoda in performance. Although he managed to reach Q3, his early pit stop led to him falling out of the running for points.
Esteban Ocon – 7
Ocon kept up his strong performance early in the season with the underperforming Alpine equipment. Scoring points wasn't likely, but he generally outperformed Gasly.
Zhou Guanyu – 6
For the seventh occasion this season, Zhou found himself outpaced by Bottas during the qualifying rounds. However, by employing a different strategy, the driver from China was able to secure a position ahead of his team member.
Pierre Gasly – Score: 6
Until the second qualifying session, Gasly seemed to have an advantage over his teammate Ocon. However, his strategy of beginning the race on soft tires and opting for an early pit stop didn't yield the desired results.
Logan Sargeant – 5.5
Sargeant was unable to record a qualifying time, extending his poor beginning to the season at Imola. He experienced a rather unremarkable race.
Valtteri Bottas – 6.5
Bottas has consistently outperformed Zhou in qualifying, beating him in 15 out of the last 16 races. However, he lost positions towards the end of the race due to issues with tyre degradation.
Fernando Alonso – 5
This weekend could easily rank as the most disappointing in Alonso's Formula 1 history. He suffered a crash in the third free practice, and then was eliminated in the first qualifying session. Essentially, the race turned into a practice run for him.
Alex Albon – 6
Albon's performance was compromised due to an unsafe release by his team, Williams, leading to him being the sole driver not to finish the race.
