Nico Hulkenberg received a penalty, resulting in a three-place drop on the starting grid, after he passed two vehicles on the pit exit lane during the F1 qualifying session for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Hulkenberg shone during the qualifying session, achieving a fourth-place finish at the Yas Marina Circuit.

Why was Hulkenberg given a penalty?

The officials stated: "The Stewards received input from Nico Hulkenberg, the driver of Car 27, as well as a team representative. They also examined data from the marshalling system, along with video footage, timing information, and evidence from in-car cameras.

During the hearing, the driver acknowledged that he disregarded the Race Director's instructions. However, he argued that he had no choice but to break the rules to complete a lap.

"Although the Stewards recognize that the location of the team’s garages constrains their ability to deploy the cars onto the track, this cannot justify violating any rules."

Restrictions on overtaking in specific zones, such as the pit lane or, in this instance, the pit exit, are put in place to avoid potentially hazardous circumstances. Consequently, the Stewards have decided that a grid penalty is justified in this situation.

What were Hulkenberg's comments?

Although Hulkenberg demonstrated impressive speed during the practice sessions on Friday, he was surprised by how well Haas performed.

Speaking with Sky Sports, he said, "From the first practice session yesterday, I had a positive vibe and a strong sense that finishing in the top ten was certainly within reach this weekend. However, did I expect to do this well? No, not at all," Hulkenberg shared with Sky.

"Several of the leading competitors are having some difficulties. However, our car is performing well, and we've been executing our strategies effectively, resulting in a strong qualifying session for us."
