Verstappen Urges Ricciardo to Stay Positive Amid Uncertain F1 Future: ‘You’ve Achieved A Lot
Max Verstappen believes that Daniel Ricciardo shouldn't "pity himself" despite an uncertain future.
"Although things might not always go as planned at different points in your career, you have still accomplished a great deal…"
Max Verstappen has advised Daniel Ricciardo not to "feel sorry for himself" despite the heavy rumors surrounding his future in Formula 1.
In the lead-up to the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend, there has been significant speculation about Ricciardo's future with VCARB, with some suggesting that this could be his last race with the team.
Ricciardo acknowledged to Sky Sports F1 on Thursday in Singapore that he could potentially be replaced mid-season.
Max Verstappen, who has maintained a strong friendship with Daniel Ricciardo since they were teammates at Red Bull from 2016 to 2018, thinks the Australian has every reason to be proud of his Formula 1 accomplishments.
"Daniel is an excellent person and has shown his capabilities as an outstanding F1 driver," Verstappen remarked during the FIA press conference. "He’s a good friend of mine, and it’s unfortunate to be in such a situation. However, he shouldn't feel downhearted. Occasionally, things may not go as planned at different points in your career, but he has still accomplished a great deal—far more than most people could ever hope for."
"Regardless of whether this is the final race, you can reflect on an incredible accomplishment that few people achieve and perhaps pursue other endeavors in life. Why not? There are many other racing series or different paths to consider."
"Perhaps relax at the farm and enjoy yourself. He's a fantastic person. Whether or not you deserve to be here isn't the main issue. Many people are deserving of being here, while some are not – that's just how life works. This is true across all sports."
Should Ricciardo be swapped out at VCARB, it's anticipated that Liam Lawson will be the one to step in.
Yuki Tsunoda, who races alongside Ricciardo, shared his thoughts on the situation involving his teammate.
Tsunoda expressed his agreement with Max, stating that he holds him in high regard and is eager to see how things unfold.
“I have a positive opinion of him. Everyone here is eager to watch him compete too. Whether he merits it or not is beside the point. As Max mentioned, he's accomplished a great deal. We’ll have to wait and see.”
