Max Verstappen leads the way in the first practice round at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen easily led the way in the first practice session at the F1 Belgian Grand Prix.
Red Bull's current world champion crossed the finish line with a 0.531-second lead over McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who secured his first grand prix win in the previous race in Hungary.
However, Verstappen's effort to secure a victory after three consecutive races without a win has been dealt a blow, as it has been announced he will incur a 10-place grid penalty in Sunday's grand prix due to the installation of a new power unit.
Alex Albon impressively clocked the third-fastest time in his Williams, trailing Verstappen by 0.727 seconds.
The driver from Williams managed to clock in faster times than both Mercedes drivers, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who finished over eight tenths of a second slower than Verstappen's leading time.
Charles Leclerc secured the sixth position for Ferrari, followed by Red Bull's Sergio Perez and Lando Norris from McLaren.
Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll secured positions within the top 10 for Ferrari and Aston Martin, respectively.
Esteban Ocon managed to complete only a single lap before a suspected leak in his Alpine vehicle forced him to remain in the garage.
The only other significant event in FP1 involved Daniel Ricciardo, who lost control and spun his RB exiting La Source at the beginning of the session.
