Members of Parliament are set to receive a pay increase that exceeds the rate of inflation, bringing their yearly earnings to £93,904, according to the organization responsible for setting parliamentary salaries.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is suggesting an increase in MPs' salaries by 2.8% starting from April of the upcoming fiscal year.

This adjustment would increase their yearly salary from £91,346 to £93,904, marking an almost £20,000 growth over the last decade.

Members of Parliament are also reimbursed for expenses related to their employees, office operations, lodging, and transportation.

IPSA stated that the raise aligns with the government's suggested pay guidelines for public sector employees.

The proposal is set for a period of public consultation. Since its establishment in 2011 following the 2009 parliamentary expenses scandal, all suggestions regarding MPs' salaries made by IPSA have been approved.

The increase surpasses the inflation rate of 2.5%, which exceeds the Bank of England's target of 2%.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) takes into account various factors when setting the salaries for Members of Parliament. These include nationwide salary data, compensation levels within the public sector, the authority's established guidelines for remuneration, and the broader economic environment.

Richard Lloyd, the chair of IPSA, stated: "We have strived to reach equitable determinations regarding salaries for both MPs and the general public."

"Our salary plan for 2025-26 takes into account the conditions of the broader public sector workforce, acknowledging the essential contributions of MPs and the prevailing economic situation."

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is required to evaluate the salaries of Members of Parliament during the initial year of each new parliamentary session.

Nevertheless, since the election took place in July, the first anniversary falls three months into the new fiscal year. Therefore, IPSA has introduced its most recent salary proposal as a temporary solution.

A reassessment of salaries will take place in July, accompanied by a comprehensive evaluation of the method used to determine MPs' compensation, setting the stage for establishing their pay starting in 2026.

In the previous year, Members of Parliament received a salary hike of 5.5%.

A Scottish Conservative Member of the Scottish Parliament has refuted claims that he employed artificial intelligence to generate nearly 1,000 questions for parliament, amid allegations of squandering £100,000 of public funds.

Calls have been made for Douglas Lumsden to issue an apology and reimburse the expenses linked to the 987 inquiries raised in January.

The inquiries sought details regarding the quantity of sauce packets, salt and pepper sachets at Holyrood, as well as the total number of straws acquired by the Scottish government over the past decade.

The Scottish National Party reported that inquiries were made regarding the number of flags from the Scottish parliament that had disappeared in the last ten years, as well as the total count and height of flagpoles owned.

The Member of the Scottish Parliament representing North East Scotland raised questions about the typical earnings or deficits from honey jar sales at the Holyrood store. Additionally, they inquired into the methods used to confirm that the beeswax for the Great Seal of Scotland is sourced from the parliament's own bees.

Written inquiries serve as a tool to gather information for the citizenry and to oversee the activities of both the government and the legislative body.

Researchers have uncovered data on various subjects including the frequency of repairs at the Toll of Birness, the expenditure on foreign missions, the annual replacement of signs and streetlights on the A90, the amount spent on electricity by the Scottish government over a period of five years, and details regarding the size and worth of the government's vehicle fleet, including the count of Teslas in possession of the Scottish government.

The lawmaker pointed out that his Scottish Labour colleagues, Monica Lennon and Jackie Baillie, had posed more questions than he had during this session of parliament.

Mr. Lumsden stated, "I will persist in challenging this corrupt administration and refuse to be muted in defending the interests of the northeast."

Scottish Labour declined to respond to Mr. Lumsden's remarks.

In the midst of the debate, SNP MSP Kevin Stewart labeled Mr. Lumsden's inquiries as "frivolous" and proposed that he should issue an apology and reimburse the expenses associated with his questions.

Mr. Stewart noted, "While it's crucial for MSPs to scrutinize the government and parliament, the sheer number of inquiries being made shows a blatant disrespect for the expenditure of taxpayer money."

"During a financial crisis, voters are justifiably questioning his actions."
