Under Pressure: Sergio Perez’s Hungarian GP Qualifying Crash Intensifies Red Bull Scrutiny
Stressed Sergio Perez crashes during Hungarian GP qualifying
Sergio Perez fails to qualify at the Hungarian Grand Prix after crashing.
Sergio Perez was involved in an accident during the initial phase of qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix in Formula 1.
The Mexican driver, facing growing scrutiny to maintain his position with Red Bull even after securing a new contract, lost control on a wet track at Turn 7 and crashed into the barriers during the first qualifying session at the Hungaroring.
Perez had posted the ninth-fastest time and appeared poised to advance to Q2 before his accident, which will inevitably increase the pressure on him.
Due to the severe damage inflicted on Perez’s Red Bull car in the crash, he will begin Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix from no better than the 16th position.
This development follows reports suggesting that Perez's contract includes a performance clause permitting Red Bull to substitute him if he trails teammate Max Verstappen by over 100 points at the summer break.
The difference in points between the Red Bull drivers stands at 137, with just two races remaining before August.
Over the last six races, Perez has not placed above seventh and has accumulated just 15 points.
In response to the accident, Martin Brundle commented on Sky Sports: "Was he entering the corner at an insane speed? Was he out of position? Did he error? No. He took the correct line but found no traction when he arrived."
"He veered off the curb at Turn Seven, which might have caused his right-rear tire to get slightly wetter. He was positioned fairly high, and as he turned in, it matched the current trajectory."
Russell managed to grab it, whereas Perez missed it. This is similar to the incident at Silverstone where Verstappen secured it at Copse but Sergio failed to do so.
These are pivotal moments for both him and Red Bull. What actions will they take regarding this situation? How long can they continue to rely on the hope that he will regain his confidence? I genuinely sympathize with him in this instance.
