A cabinet minister expressed to Sky News that Sir Keir Starmer, who holds a high-pressure role, should be permitted to accept gifts and hospitality, provided they are properly disclosed.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds remarked that being a prime minister involves dedicating nearly all of one's waking hours to the role, and asserted that if they manage to engage in activities that are significant to them, he sees no issue with it.
Politics Today: Outrage as Starmer Receives Substantial Donations in Gifts
Following an investigation by Sky News' Westminster Accounts project, it was revealed that since assuming leadership of the Labour Party, Sir Keir has accepted significantly more complimentary gifts than any other MP.
Since December 2019, he has been given £107,145 in gifts, benefits, and hospitality, as recorded in a particular section of the parliamentary register of MPs' interests.
The Premier League is a major benefactor in terms of hospitality contributions, and Sir Keir, an avid supporter of Arsenal, has been gifted nearly £40,000 worth of tickets since December 2019.
Mr. Reynolds stated: "I believe that anyone who holds a position as demanding, significant, and expansive as that of the prime minister is likely dedicating almost every waking moment to their duties."

Westminster Records: Look Up Your Representative
"If they have the opportunity to spend some quality time with their loved ones or engage in something that holds significant value for them, like supporting a football team throughout their life, I see no issue with that."
He noted that it is generally assumed for security purposes that prime ministers would occupy the directors' box at a sporting event.
When questioned on receiving complimentary tickets to major concert events such as those by Taylor Swift and Coldplay, he commented, "These events are significant cultural and sporting occasions. I believe it's essential for those in public roles to maintain a link to these types of activities."

Labour MP labels Starmer as 'ivory tower leader' – accurate description?
Political reporter
This morning on Sky News, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds made a strong effort to clarify, rationalize, and support the prime minister's fondness for receiving complimentary gifts.
Reynolds opted for a strategy distinct from Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who argued on Sunday that prime ministers and their spouses should present themselves well internationally, thus justifying the acceptance of clothing gifts in the absence of a taxpayer-funded budget for such expenses.
Today, Reynolds justified the prime minister's actions by stating that given the prime minister's strenuous workload, he is entitled to broader life experiences beyond constant work.
Amid accusations of a conflict of interest looming large, the Prime Minister's fondness for complimentary football match tickets is under scrutiny, especially as his administration contemplates the introduction of a football regulator – a claim strongly refuted by Downing Street. This issue appears likely to persist through the Labour conference.
Addressing Labour's rank-and-file MPs, there is a profound sense of frustration regarding the management of this issue by Starmer’s senior staff.
A critic labeled Starmer as an "ivory tower leader," stating that his talk of making hard economic choices—such as reducing the winter fuel subsidy for millions of retirees—clashed with the portrayal of a prime minister who has accepted gifts valued at over £100,000 since December 2019.
Throughout the electoral campaign, Starmer positioned himself as a representative of everyday citizens and criticized Rishi Sunak for being disconnected from the general populace.
Starmer is starting to realize that presenting himself as morally superior might not have been the brilliant political move it seemed to be three months earlier.
Earlier this week, Sir Keir stood by his decision to accept complimentary football tickets, citing security concerns as his reason: "If I don't accept a gift of hospitality, I can't attend a match."
He faces additional scrutiny following a BBC report stating that his chief of staff, Sue Gray, earns over £170,000, surpassing the prime minister's salary.
Mr. Reynolds stated that the wages of advisors are determined through an official procedure, not by politicians.
He stated, "Sue Gray is diligently advancing the government's agenda by fulfilling our commitments. I believe that’s the most crucial aspect for anyone working in Downing Street, and I can assure you, that is precisely what's taking place."
