Tyre Temperatures: Toto Wolff Identifies Key Challenge for Mercedes at Singapore GP
Toto Wolff discusses the primary obstacle for Mercedes at the Singapore Grand Prix
Toto Wolff previews the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix, identifying the key difficulty they will face.
Toto Wolff thinks that Mercedes' biggest obstacle at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix this weekend will be "managing tyre temperatures," especially after their uneven performance in Azerbaijan.
Mercedes demonstrated impressive speed during the latter portion of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday. George Russell expressed confusion over the significant difference in performance between the two types of tires.
Russell showcased remarkable speed on the hard tires, which are less prone to overheating.
The Marina Bay Street Circuit is expected to present a comparable difficulty because of the high temperatures and the demanding nature of the grand prix.
Anticipating the upcoming weekend, Wolff remarked: “Next, we go directly to Singapore for the second race of this consecutive double-header. While Marina Bay, much like Baku, is a street circuit, it presents a unique set of challenges."
"Both drivers and team members face immense physical challenges. The heat and humidity significantly contribute to this, as does the nature of the track."
"The track has uneven sections, features a combination of slow and fast turns, and has walls ready to penalize any mistakes."
Since the summer hiatus, Mercedes has had difficulty regaining their previous performance level.
Prior to the Zandvoort race, Mercedes had secured victories in three out of the previous four races, establishing themselves as the team to watch in Formula 1.
However, since that time, they have faced difficulties while Ferrari has regained a superior position in the rankings.
Following a weekend of varied results in Azerbaijan, Wolff stated that they plan to apply the lessons learned from Baku to achieve better results in Singapore.
"Sometimes we performed well, but we struggled to maintain that level of performance consistently. Our biggest issue was managing the tyre temperatures, and we recognize this is an area we need to work on."
“It is promising to see that, once the car is functioning properly, we have the speed to compete effectively."
"Although we managed to secure a spot on the podium, we recognize it was due to luck and that we truly deserved fifth place."
