Two Cars, One Goal: Lando Norris Takes a Jab at Sergio Perez as McLaren Eyes Advantage Over Red Bull in Constructors’ Battle
Lando Norris takes a jab at Sergio Perez with ‘two is better than one’ remark
Lando Norris has pointed out a significant benefit McLaren holds against Red Bull in the current championship race.
Lando Norris pointed out McLaren’s significant benefit of having two competitive F1 cars, subtly criticizing Sergio Perez after the Canadian Grand Prix.
As Max Verstappen clinched his sixth win of the 2024 Formula 1 season, Sergio Perez faced a tough day, being eliminated in the first qualifying session and later crashing out of the race, returning to the pit lane with a broken front wing.
As Ferrari missed out on scoring points, Red Bull managed to widen their lead in the constructors' championship. However, Perez's inconsistent performance remains a troubling issue.
Norris emphasized that McLaren has a pair of cars competing, whereas Verstappen frequently finds himself racing solo at the front.
Evaluating the competition among constructors, Norris commented, "To be frank, right now, I believe it's mainly between Ferrari and us. We'll continue to push hard, and I think that’s currently one of our greatest advantages."
“At McLaren, we have two drivers who consistently perform without errors and maximize the car's potential each weekend. It's uncommon to see many other teams on the grid achieving this level of reliability. Therefore, our focus is more on how we can compete with Ferrari."
"We've been more reliable as a team leading up to this weekend. On the other hand, they've faced some errors and challenges for various reasons. Ultimately, having two strong contenders will benefit us more than just one, as seen with Max's situation. While we're performing well, it's crucial to continue advancing by introducing more upgrades and improvements."
"Mercedes entering the competition will make it more difficult for us to achieve high scores like we did today."
Verstappen isn't overly worried about Red Bull's prospects for clinching the constructors' championship this year, stating that consistent victories are what truly matter.
"The harm was already inflicted on Checo yesterday," Verstappen stated. "Starting from the back in these conditions is extremely challenging. Then, I noticed he had to retire due to the damage."
“I knew I had to secure a significant number of points to prevent other teams from closing the gap. Ultimately, as long as you're winning and scoring 25 points, even if the competitors finish in second and third place, you don't lose too much ground. Occasionally, you can afford these isolated instances. However, we always aim to have both cars performing at the top. I'm confident that this situation will change very soon.”
"We really need to focus on improving our car to make it easier and more comfortable to drive. Once we achieve that, I'm confident both cars will be back performing at the same level they were at the start of the season."
