Turning Down Greatness: The Untold Story of the Only F1 Driver Who Rejected Adrian Newey
"I am the only individual who has ever expressed a desire not to collaborate with Adrian Newey."
"His focus was lacking. On one occasion, he even forgot to disconnect the radio."
In recent months, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have openly expressed their respect for Adrian Newey.
The current chief technology officer of Red Bull is set to transition to Aston Martin next year, assuming the role of managing technical partner and becoming a shareholder. This development has already caused a stir within the Formula 1 community.
Newey is considered the best car designer in the history of Formula 1, and having him on a team can greatly enhance its performance.
However, a particular race car driver failed to recognize Newey's capabilities.
Former Formula 1 driver Christian Danner considers himself to be the sole individual in the motorsport world who has turned down assistance from Newey.
In 1982, when Danner rejected him, Newey was just starting out in his own career.
In an interview with Formula Scout, Danner claimed that he is uniquely known in the motor racing community for having expressed a desire not to collaborate with Adrian Newey, describing this distinction as an unfortunate honor.
"Adrian and I continue to find it amusing and can't stop laughing about it."
A person named Manfred Cassani approached me and offered, "I own a BMW M1 Procar and an F2 team. Christian, why not join me, and I'll help you become a Formula 1 driver?"
"I participated in five or six races using the M1, took part in a practice session for an F2 race at the Nurburgring, and competed in a hillclimb event driving the F2 car."
In 1981, Danner received an opportunity to join the factory team of March-BMW.
He went on to say, "I never struggled with self-assurance, but I was aware that I lacked experience in driving single-seater cars. So, they arranged a test for me at Goodwood, and I performed well."
The challenge I faced was that my teammates, Corrado Fabi and Thierry Boutsen, had secured first place and second place in the European Formula 3 championship. They showed me that handling a single-seater race car is quite complex.
"It was during the 1981 season that I managed to fully understand and master it."
Newey was employed by March at the time. He served as Danner's race engineer for just one event, which took place at Silverstone. Unfortunately, Danner had to retire from the race after his car ran out of fuel.
Danner found out later that his tank had a leak. However, he was hesitant to involve his young and inexperienced race engineer, Newey.
As a result, Danner insisted on having Ralph Bellamy take Newey's place.
He expressed that he was reluctant to collaborate with Newey, saying, "Adrian, neither of us has any experience, so this partnership isn’t going to work."
"He lacked focus. There was an instance where he forgot to disconnect the radio, and he was unaware of how he was managing fuel usage."
"He was merely a budding designer, you see?"
"As it happened, Ralph took over my car while Adrian partnered with [Johnny] Cecotto. The competition included Cecotto, me, and [Corrado] Fabi, who ultimately clinched the championship title."
For seven seasons, Danner had intermittent participation in Formula 1 races. In addition to that, he competed in IndyCar events and took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, along with various other racing series.
Adrian Newey became a legendary figure in Formula 1 car design and, this year, he was possibly the most sought-after person in the sport.
