Triumph Over Tears: How Lewis Hamilton Conquered Self-Doubt to Win British GP After 2.5-Year Drought
Lewis Hamilton's father reacts to emotional "not good enough" confession
"Occasionally, you need to work things out on your own. That's exactly what he does."
Anthony Hamilton has praised his son, Lewis Hamilton, for conquering his self-doubt to secure his first Formula 1 grand prix victory in two and a half years.
The Mercedes driver clinched his ninth win at Silverstone during the British Grand Prix last weekend, marking his most emotional victory to date.
Hamilton hadn't secured a victory since 2021, the year marked by the Abu Dhabi dispute and the rise of Max Verstappen as the new dominant figure in Formula 1.
With tears in his eyes, Hamilton confessed, "There were certainly times from 2021 up to now when I doubted my abilities and feared it might never happen again."
His father addressed Hamilton's admission in a conversation with Channel 4: "We've discussed it. He always brings it up."
"I believe it's really beneficial. It's important to reflect on yourself occasionally."
There are times when you need to reflect and evaluate yourself independently, without seeking advice from others.
"Individuals often reassure others by saying, 'Don't stress, you're amazing, everything will turn out fine.'"
"I always tell him that! Yet, there are moments when you need to discover things on your own. That's exactly what he does."
After narrowly missing a historic eighth Formula 1 championship at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix because of race director Michael Masi's interpretation of the Safety Car regulation, Hamilton contemplated stepping away from the sport.
His father advised that it's impossible to make sound decisions when emotions are running high.
"That feeling lingered for an extended period."
"Stay silent and focus on completing the task. Only after setting aside your emotions should you decide what to do."
Just a week after George Russell's victory in Austria, Hamilton secured a win at Silverstone.
Mercedes have equaled Ferrari's number of race victories this season and emerged as the leading team in Formula 1.
The Mercedes drivers are now reaping the benefits of the W15's consistent improvement, which had been showing promise since the Montreal race.
"It's a boost in self-assurance. That's the key aspect," stated Anthony Hamilton.
"You're uncertain and wonder, 'Is it my fault?'"
"In reality, it's not your fault. If you've put in all the effort, returned, and given your all, but still have doubts about yourself, it's not on you. It's factors beyond your influence."
"Such matters cannot be measured."
Hamilton's father responded to his son's emotional interviews after the race: "He was incredibly emotional. It was the culmination of giving his all today."
"He was disappointed about not securing the pole position. He likely went home, pondered over it, and resolved to return the next day with maximum effort."
"The weather was quite unpredictable. However, during such unpredictable weather, he always smiles!"
Anthony Hamilton expressed his confidence in Lewis by saying, "I always have strong faith in him. When the weather changes, I never lose that confidence. However, you can't help but worry because unpredictable things can occur during rainy conditions."
"At the age of eight, he managed to win go-kart races in the UK despite driving on slick tires in windy and rainy conditions."
