Toyota Corolla Touring Sports Triumphs as Auto Express Estate Car of the Year 2023
2023 Estate Car of the Year: Toyota Corolla Touring Sports
The Toyota Corolla Touring Sports has been named Estate Car of the Year by Auto Express, with the BMW 3 Series Touring and Skoda Octavia Estate receiving honorable mentions.
In recent years, the Estate Car category winner has typically been a predictable choice in our New Car Awards. But for 2023, the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports has emerged as the unexpected frontrunner.
This accomplishment is well earned, thanks to enhancements throughout the whole Corolla range, which now features upgraded hybrid technology. Toyota’s new battery delivers 14 percent more power while being 14 percent lighter. Furthermore, the electric motor has increased power, and the transaxle has become lighter.
Consequently, the hybrid system, which was already advanced, has seen significant improvements. The updated 1.8-liter hybrid model trimmed its 0-62mph acceleration time by 1.8 seconds compared to the previous version. Meanwhile, the 2.0-liter model now delivers 193 horsepower, and both models boast WLTP ratings exceeding 64 miles per gallon. Our real-world tests confirmed these figures to be realistic under suitable conditions. Despite these upgrades, the Corolla continues to offer an excellent blend of ride comfort and handling.
Another factor contributing to its victory this year is that Toyota has made significant improvements to one of the Corolla’s previously weakest aspects: the infotainment system. The outdated, cumbersome setup has been replaced with a more attractive and user-friendly system. This change significantly enhances the overall appeal.
In a station wagon, what is most important is its usefulness. The trunk space is up to 596 liters when the seats are upright, and the low, rectangular cargo area simplifies transporting large objects.
Our Selection
Toyota Corolla Touring Sports 1.8 VVT-i Hybrid Design (priced at £33,115)
The 1.8 hybrid engine is the best choice. Following Toyota’s upgrades earlier this year, it now offers excellent performance, and the trunk space of the 1.8 model is marginally bigger than that of the 2.0-liter version. Additionally, the Design trim comes equipped with all the essential features at an affordable price.
Recognized
BMW 3 Series Wagon
For those prioritizing style and driving pleasure over a bit of cargo room, the BMW 3 Series Touring is an excellent choice. This vehicle combines a prestigious brand with superior craftsmanship, offering a respectable 500-liter trunk that is made even more practical with its split tailgate design.
Skoda Octavia Station Wagon
Our previous top contender in this category has been downgraded to a commendation this year. Although the Octavia Estate remains one of the roomiest choices available, its current prices and offers no longer make it the best value in its class.
