Toyota Accelerates into the Future: Joins Ionna EV Charging Network with Stations Set for 2024 Launch
Toyota is teaming up with the emerging Ionna EV fast-charging network in North America, as revealed by both entities on Wednesday. They plan to roll out charging stations by 2024.
The total of car manufacturers with stakes in the charging grid has risen to eight, following an investment of an unspecified amount.
Ionna has announced plans to establish an extensive network comprising over 30,000 high-capacity rapid charging points throughout the United States and Canada. This network will cover areas in cities as well as those near highways. The consortium has expanded to incorporate Toyota/Lexus alongside existing members BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis.
The network for electric vehicle charging began to reveal itself in June, suggesting that it had begun constructing its initial charging units. The unveiling of its first charging locations in the United States is scheduled for 2024.
Owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles will be able to use the upcoming charging stations, as per the company's announcement. Specifics on the timing and method were not provided. Presently, Toyota's U.S. electric lineup is limited to the bZ4X and Lexus RZ models. However, the brand plans to expand its electric offerings soon, introducing a new three-row electric SUV manufactured in Kentucky and an all-electric version of the Toyota Highlander, expected to debut in 2026.

The upcoming releases of those two car models will feature the Tesla-inspired NACS charging system, as per Toyota's schedule for integration. Ionna has mentioned that the network's plugs will support at least 350 kw, and has expressed dedication to upholding both the NACS and CCS charging protocols.
The introduction of Ionna in July 2023 marked a significant milestone as it presented a network of charging stations that could potentially match the expanse of Tesla's Supercharger system. Its design prioritizes green energy sources and incorporates features such as advanced reservation capabilities, streamlined route mapping, and the convenience of Plug & Charge technology to minimize the need for repeated credit card use or app interactions.
The placement of charging stations is set to change, moving away from the usual spots chosen by prominent groups such as Electrify America. Expect to see fewer stations tucked away in isolated areas or the far reaches of large retail store parking spaces.
