**”Toto Wolff Urges McLaren to Prioritize Lando Norris with Team Orders Amid F1 Title Race”**
Toto Wolff suggests McLaren prioritize Lando Norris through team orders
Mercedes chief comments on McLaren's internal strategy discussion
Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes, has hinted that McLaren may need to make a tough decision regarding team orders as the Formula 1 championship battle nears its end.
McLaren seemed poised to take full advantage of Red Bull's Max Verstappen having a difficult weekend by securing the top two spots on the Italian Grand Prix starting grid. However, Lando Norris, who had secured pole position, fell to third place during the first lap after a clash with his teammate Oscar Piastri.
Piastri overtook his teammate with a bold maneuver on the outer part of the Della Roggia chicane, and then Norris surrendered another spot to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc at the next turn.
Norris secured third place, trailing behind Piastri and Leclerc, and narrowed Verstappen's lead in the drivers' championship to 62 points with eight races left, as the Dutchman managed to finish only in sixth.
Toto Wolff commented on McLaren's decision to let their drivers compete, stating, "As a team now fighting at the front, you find yourself in a tough spot. On one hand, they are racers just like we are."
"Our goal is to ensure the most deserving person succeeds, but when it starts to create problems and negatively affect the team's performance, how should one respond to that?"
"The team often ends up losing because when you lock in positions and impose team orders, it might not align with the spirit of racing we aspire to, but the logical approach must take precedence."
"In the end, no one wants to miss winning a championship by just three or five points that could have been earned. Balancing this is extremely challenging, and there's no single right way to manage it."
Wolff suggested that McLaren's team leader, Andrea Stella, might need to reconsider their 'Papaya Rules' and possibly shift from his current “racers’ soul” strategy.
Toto Wolff mentioned that Andrea Stella and Zak Brown have an unparalleled understanding of the sport. He pointed out that Andrea has witnessed numerous events unfold firsthand during his time at Ferrari.
"He possesses the competitive spirit typical of racers, which means he prefers not to interfere and to let them race freely. However, I believe a decision will be made post-race regarding our approach to this situation… what is our strategy?"
"At this point, we began to lay out the guidelines for participation and later opted to use the term 'racing intent' instead, as 'rules' seemed too strict for the drivers."
