Toto Wolff Declares F1 Constructors’ Championship ‘Wide Open’ After Lando Norris Dominates Dutch GP
Toto Wolff believes the F1 title competition is "wide open" after Lando Norris "dominated" his competitors. "In my view, the constructors' championship is wide open, and that's beneficial for Formula 1."
Toto Wolff thinks the competition for the F1 constructors' championship is still very much alive after Lando Norris delivered a dominant performance against McLaren's competitors at the Dutch Grand Prix.
On Sunday, Norris clinched his second career win, finishing more than 22 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen.
Norris is currently trailing Verstappen by 70 points with nine races remaining in the 2024 season.
Norris showcased a level of dominance reminiscent of Verstappen's performance last year by remarkably clocking the fastest lap on tyres that had already completed 42 laps.
During a Sunday press conference at Zandvoort, which included reporters from Crash.net, Wolff evaluated the current situation in the championship competition.
He mentioned that McLaren has demonstrated their ability to successfully implement car upgrades since Austria last year.
"Today’s performance was truly remarkable. He completely dominated all his rivals, setting the fastest lap at the end with tires that had already been used for 42 laps. He finished with a twenty-second lead."
In my view, the constructors' championship is still anyone's game, which is beneficial for Formula 1," stated Wolff. He believes that while Verstappen currently has a firm grip on the drivers' championship, this could shift rapidly due to McLaren's recent surge in performance alongside Red Bull's recent difficulties.
"The driver championship seems to still be largely under Max's control, but it will be interesting to watch for any shifts in dominance and to see how much we can influence that, given our recent strong performances," he remarked.
“If our car had been performing at a standard level, we likely wouldn’t have surpassed Norris, but we would have found ourselves in a more thrilling situation.”
Mercedes faced challenges during the Dutch Grand Prix, ultimately securing seventh and eighth places.
Toto Wolff indicated that the reduced practice sessions during the weekend, caused by the weather, played a role in their decline in performance.
Mercedes’ latest floor design is generating conversation and needs more in-depth examination.
