Title: “Toto Wolff Urges McLaren to Prioritize Lando Norris with Team Orders as F1 Title Race Heats Up
Toto Wolff suggests McLaren might want to prioritize Lando Norris through team orders.
The head of Mercedes weighs in on the discussion about McLaren's team strategy.
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has indicated that McLaren may need to make a tough decision regarding team orders as the F1 championship battle nears its end.
McLaren seemed poised to take full advantage of Max Verstappen from Red Bull having a rough weekend by securing the top two spots on the starting grid for the Italian Grand Prix. However, pole position holder Lando Norris dropped from first to third place on the opening lap following a tussle with his teammate Oscar Piastri.
Piastri overtook his teammate with a daring maneuver on the outside of the Della Roggia chicane. Shortly after, Norris was overtaken again, this time by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc at the next corner.
Norris secured a third-place finish, trailing behind Piastri and Leclerc. This result reduced Verstappen's lead in the drivers' championship to 62 points, with eight races left, as the Dutchman managed to come in only sixth.
Toto Wolff explained that a racing team suddenly competing at the front faces a difficult situation. On one hand, the team consists of racers just like them. Wolff said this in response to a question about whether he was surprised that McLaren permitted their drivers to compete against each other.
"We aim to ensure that the most deserving person succeeds, but when things start to fall apart and it affects the team's performance, how should one respond?"
"The team often finds itself at a disadvantage because when you lock in positions and impose team orders, it may not align with the spirit of racing. However, the logical approach must take precedence."
Ultimately, no one wants to miss out on winning a championship by just a few points, especially when those points could have been easily secured. Balancing this challenge is incredibly tough, and there's no one-size-fits-all approach to managing it.
Wolff suggested that McLaren's team leader, Andrea Stella, might need to reconsider their 'Papaya Rules' and possibly shift from his current "racers' soul" strategy.
"No one understands sports better than Andrea Stella and Zak Brown," Wolff remarked. "Andrea has witnessed everything unfold firsthand during his time at Ferrari."
"He possesses the spirit of a true racer, reluctant to intervene and preferring to let the competitors race. However, I believe a decision will be made on how to manage this situation after the race."
"At this point, we began to lay out the guidelines for conduct, but then we revised the term to 'racing intent' since the word 'rules' felt too strict for the drivers."
