### Title: Toto Wolff Urges McLaren to Prioritize Lando Norris with Team Orders Amid Tightening F1 Title Race
Toto Wolff believes McLaren ought to prioritize Lando Norris through team orders.
The head of Mercedes shares his opinion on the discussion surrounding McLaren's team strategy.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has indicated that McLaren may need to make a tough decision regarding team orders as the F1 championship battle nears its end.
McLaren seemed poised to take full advantage of Red Bull's Max Verstappen's disappointing weekend by securing the top two positions on the Italian Grand Prix starting grid. However, pole-sitter Lando Norris dropped from first to third during the opening lap after battling with his teammate Oscar Piastri.
Piastri overtook his teammate with a bold maneuver on the outside of the Della Roggia chicane, and then Norris was passed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc at the next turn.
Norris secured third place, trailing Piastri and Leclerc, and reduced Verstappen's lead in the drivers' championship to 62 points with eight races left, as the Dutchman finished in sixth place.
Toto Wolff commented on the challenging position faced by McLaren as a leading racing team. He acknowledged that the team found themselves in a difficult situation, balancing the competitive nature of their drivers with the strategic decisions required at the front of the pack. When questioned about his surprise regarding McLaren's decision to let their drivers compete against each other, Wolff noted that, like his own team, McLaren's drivers are inherently racers.
"We aim to ensure that the most deserving person succeeds, but when the situation turns problematic and affects the team's effectiveness, how should you respond to that?"
"The team consistently ends up losing because when you lock in positions and implement team orders, it might go against the essence of racing that we love, but the logical approach must take precedence."
"In the end, you don’t want to miss out on winning a championship by a narrow margin of three or five points that you could have easily secured. Balancing this is extremely challenging, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing it."
Wolff suggested that McLaren's team boss, Andrea Stella, might need to reconsider their 'Papaya Rules' and shift away from his "racer's instinct" strategy.
Wolff remarked that Andrea Stella and Zak Brown have an unparalleled understanding of sports. He noted that Andrea, in particular, has witnessed numerous events unfold firsthand during his tenure at Ferrari.
"He possesses the spirit of a true racer who prefers to let the competitors race freely, but I believe a decision will be made after this event… what's our approach to managing this?"
"We began by setting guidelines for interaction, but later altered the term to 'racing intent' since 'rules' seemed too strict for the drivers."
