Time for Team Orders? Toto Wolff Weighs In on McLaren’s Strategy Dilemma Amid F1 Title Race
Toto Wolff suggests McLaren should prioritize Lando Norris with team orders
Mercedes chief comments on McLaren's internal team orders discussion
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has indicated that McLaren may need to make a tough decision regarding team orders as the F1 championship battle nears its end.
McLaren seemed poised to take full advantage of Max Verstappen's rough weekend at the Italian Grand Prix by securing the top two spots on the grid. However, Lando Norris, who started in pole position, dropped to third place during the first lap following a tussle with his teammate Oscar Piastri.
Piastri overtook his teammate with a bold maneuver on the outside of the Della Roggia chicane. Shortly after, Norris was overtaken by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc at the next turn.
Norris secured third place, trailing behind Piastri and Leclerc, and reduced Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ championship to 62 points with eight races left, as the Dutchman managed only a sixth-place finish.
When asked whether it was surprising that McLaren let their drivers compete, Wolff commented that as a team now fighting at the forefront, they find themselves in a tricky situation. He noted that on one hand, McLaren's drivers are racers just like them.
"We aim to ensure that the most capable person prevails, but when the situation turns problematic and affects the team's effectiveness, what steps should you take in response?"
"The team consistently ends up losing because when you lock in positions and implement team orders, it might go against the essence of our racing spirit. However, the logical approach must take precedence."
In the end, you definitely don't want to miss out on winning a championship by just a few points that you could have easily gained. Balancing that fine line is extremely challenging, and there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for managing it.
Wolff suggested that McLaren's team boss Andrea Stella might need to reconsider their 'Papaya Rules' and shift from his current "racer's soul" strategy.
Toto Wolff mentioned that Andrea Stella and Zak Brown have an unparalleled understanding of the sport. He highlighted that Andrea has witnessed many similar situations unfold firsthand during his time at Ferrari.
"He possesses a competitive spirit that makes him reluctant to intervene and prefers to let the racers compete freely. However, I believe there will be some decision made after this race regarding how we manage these situations."
"At this point, we began implementing guidelines for engagement and subsequently altered the terminology to 'racing intent' because the term 'rules' seemed too stringent for the drivers."
