Time for Team Orders? Toto Wolff Urges McLaren to Prioritize Lando Norris in F1 Title Battle
Toto Wolff: McLaren Should Prioritize Lando Norris with Team Orders
Mercedes Chief Weighs in on McLaren's Team Orders Discussion
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has indicated that the moment has arrived for McLaren to face the tough decision of enforcing team orders as the F1 championship battle nears its end.
McLaren seemed to be in an ideal position to take advantage of a challenging weekend for Red Bull's Max Verstappen by securing the top two spots on the Italian Grand Prix starting grid. However, Lando Norris, who had secured pole position, dropped from first to third place on the opening lap following a tussle with his teammate Oscar Piastri.
Piastri overtook his teammate with a daring maneuver on the outside of the Della Roggia chicane. Shortly after, Norris dropped another spot to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc at the next turn.
Norris secured third place, trailing behind Piastri and Leclerc, and reduced Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ championship to 62 points with eight races left, as the Dutchman managed only a sixth-place finish.
Toto Wolff commented on the challenging position a top racing team like McLaren finds itself in, saying, "When you're suddenly competing at the front, it's a tough situation. On one hand, they are racers just like us," when asked if he was taken aback by McLaren's decision to let their drivers compete against each other.
"We aim to ensure that the most deserving individual succeeds, but when the situation becomes chaotic and negatively affects the team's performance, what steps should be taken?"
"The team often ends up losing because when you lock in positions and implement team orders, it might go against the spirit of racing we love. However, the logical approach needs to take precedence."
“In the end, you don’t want to miss out on winning a championship by just a few points that you could have easily earned. Balancing this is incredibly challenging, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to managing it.”
Wolff suggested that McLaren's team principal, Andrea Stella, might need to reconsider their 'Papaya Rules' and shift away from his approach that prioritizes a "racers' soul."
"In my opinion, Andrea Stella and Zak Brown have an unparalleled understanding of sports. Andrea, in particular, has witnessed everything unfold firsthand numerous times during his tenure at Ferrari," Wolff commented.
"He possesses the spirit of a racer who is reluctant to interfere and prefers to let the competitors race freely. However, I believe they will reach a decision about this matter after the race… what is our approach to managing this?"
"This is the point at which we began to implement the guidelines for engagement, later modifying the term to 'racing intent' since 'rules' seemed too strict for the drivers."
