Tech3’s Bold Return to KTM Colors for MotoGP 2025: Unveiling the Strategy Behind the Shift
Pit Beirer, the motorsports director at KTM, sheds light on why Tech3 is transitioning back to KTM from GASGAS for the MotoGP season of 2025.
Following two years adorned in GASGAS's red, Tech3 is set to align with the factory squad, adopting Red Bull KTM's livery for the 2025 MotoGP season.
What prompted the alteration?
The intention behind establishing a distinct visual identity for the KTM factory team and Tech3 was to dispel the notion of the French team being seen as a secondary outfit and to promote the Pierer Mobility Group's latest brand, GASGAS.
Despite KTM promising top-tier factory bikes for everyone, highlighted by newcomer Pedro Acosta from GASGAS being the top KTM rider, this dual branding has led to some perplexity.
KTM's head of motorsport, Pit Beirer, has outlined their objective to ensure that the Tech3 bikes, which will be ridden by newcomers Maverick Vinales and Enea Bastianini in the upcoming season, are on par with the main team's motorcycles.
"The entire setup will be decked out in orange, reflecting our aspiration to have four factory riders. Our aim is to eliminate any preference for one garage over another, creating a scenario where riders are indifferent to their allocation among the four spots."
"With Herve, we've found an incredible ally with whom we share complete confidence, as if he were one of our own. Therefore, for us, it's not a matter of 'his team, our team.'"
"Pedro played a significant role in highlighting the capabilities of our Tech3 team, demonstrating that it operates at a full factory level. This allowed riders to maximize their performance. Without Pedro's contribution, it might have been challenging to persuade the other two riders, Vinales and Bastianini, to take this path."
Beirer suggested that, from a business perspective, the choice was made to concentrate solely on KTM, noting that Red Bull supported the strategy of having four riders.
Bierer expressed satisfaction with the exposure GASGAS has received, highlighting its status as the newest addition to their brand family. Thanks to Pedro's efforts and Jorge Prado's contribution in motocross, the brand has gained global recognition.
"Conversely, we've chosen to fully invest in KTM. The market is currently experiencing challenging times, and for our endeavor, it's always somewhat challenging when discussing with a leading rider, 'Is it the GASGAS or the KTM? What distinguishes the two motorcycles?'"
In conclusion, we decided that although showcasing various brands was enjoyable, the project would be most impactful with a lineup consisting of four riders, all representing Red Bull KTM.
"I'm incredibly grateful that our collaborator, Red Bull, continues to support us in this venture, viewing it as a project involving a team of four riders."
Additionally, their perspective shifted to view it more as a unified team effort, reminiscent of when the initiative first began. Consequently, they've agreed to move forward as a cohesive unit of four. The decision on which riders to include and support will be made collectively. This allows all four competitors to access the Red Bull Training Center and benefit fully from the comprehensive support package designed for the riders.
"Thus, the choice was made to enhance the package without delving into the reasons behind each decision. It reflects our stance, along with the engineers working behind the scenes tasked with supporting both garages. The queries of 'Why is the red one in the orange garage? Why is the orange one in the red garage?' are now rendered irrelevant."
“Regardless, individuals recognize it's from us. Thus, we thought it was the right time to reveal that it indeed is us, and it's characterized by the color orange.”
Beirer faced questions about Hubert Trunkenpolz's recent statements indicating KTM's plans to introduce the MV Agusta brand to MotoGP alongside Tech3, through adaptations to a few RC16s in line with the technical regulations shift set for 2027.
"Bierer mentioned, "That was something Mr. Trunkenpolz, one of our board members, expressed, so I'll defer to him on that."
"In the immediate future ahead of us, no one advised us to switch to a different brand for MotoGP participation. Therefore, within our racing department, we currently have a definite goal."
