Taiwan’s Sole ‘Comfort Women’ Memorial Removed After Land Sale, Sparking Concerns Over Historical Memory and Women’s Rights
Taiwan's sole memorial to 'comfort women' is lost as property is auctioned off
The monument in Tainan city, established in 2018, has been relocated to storage following unsuccessful pleas for alternative solutions, according to an opposition legislator.
The brass sculpture had been positioned at a bustling crossroad in Tainan, a city in the south of Taiwan, for six years. On Wednesday evening, it was relocated to a storage facility, a legislator from the opposing Kuomintang (KMT) party informed the China Times, a newspaper based in Taipei.
According to the newspaper, Hsieh Lung-chieh stated that the statue was situated on land owned by KMT, which had recently been sold at an auction. He mentioned that for more than a year, he had been seeking assistance from the Tainan city government to find an alternative location for the statue, but his appeals were not successful.
"The issue of 'comfort women' is a significant matter related to women's rights; the statue symbolizes women who suffered during the war," Hsieh explained to the China Times. "With numerous ongoing conflicts globally, such as the one between Russia and Ukraine, it's crucial for us to recall the harsh realities of war and aspire for global peace."
