Strategic Mastery: Inside Mercedes’ Game-Changing Call at the British GP That Propelled Hamilton to Victory
Mercedes unveils the strategy behind Lewis Hamilton's win at the British Grand Prix
Toto Wolff reveals the crucial strategic decision that led to Lewis Hamilton's triumph at the British Grand Prix.
Mercedes has detailed the pivotal decision to change to soft tires for the last segment, which was instrumental in Lewis Hamilton's win at the F1 British Grand Prix.
The seven-time world champion achieved an unprecedented ninth victory at the British Grand Prix, securing the win in an electrifying race that transitioned from wet to dry conditions at Silverstone. This was after successfully overtaking McLaren’s Lando Norris and then fending off the current world championship frontrunner, Max Verstappen.
The pivotal point in the competition occurred when Mercedes made the strategic decision to bring Hamilton in for a pit stop to change to slick tires after a period of rain. This move allowed Hamilton to gain the lead over Norris, who lost time when he pitted the following lap and missed his stopping point in the McLaren pit area.
Hamilton successfully defended against a strong push from his 2021 championship competitor Verstappen in the final four laps, effectively managing his tyres and maintaining a sufficient lead to secure his first Formula 1 win in nearly three years.
"Indeed, a change was necessary, and it was quite straightforward," Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff remarked following Hamilton's initial victory since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
At the time, we doubted that choosing the hard tyre was the best decision. Looking back, it seems that the correct tyre preference would have been medium, then hard, followed by soft for optimal speed.
"We managed to pull through in the final moments. I believe our tire degradation was better than that of the McLarens, which ultimately clinched the win for us."
In response to whether Hamilton had decided on the soft tires, Wolff stated, “Today, we maintained excellent communication with the driver, ensuring the line was always open.
"Within our group, we continuously debated the advantages and disadvantages, keeping an eye on the opportunities and our strategy indicated that the right moment for a changeover had arrived. And indeed, it was precisely the right moment to make a pit stop."
Norris acknowledged that he and McLaren had missed out on another possible victory due to two misguided strategic decisions.
"We're failing to make the correct choices, yet I also hold myself accountable today for not achieving the right outcomes. I detest it. I'm frustrated by landing in this situation and finding reasons for not performing adequately."
"Numerous aspects were progressing favorably, yet we squandered our advantage during the last phase. It boiled down to a single lap, although, in my view, it wasn't just about that lap.
"I believe that even if I had executed the perfect lap, choosing the soft tires was a mistake, and I feel that Lewis would have emerged victorious regardless. Two decisions we made were detrimental to our performance today, which is particularly disheartening given the circumstances."
