Stellar Performances and Unexpected Surprises: F1 Driver Ratings from the Dutch GP at Zandvoort
Ratings for F1 drivers at the Dutch Grand Prix: One standout performer with Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc
Connor McDonagh provides his F1 driver ratings for the Dutch Grand Prix held at Zandvoort.
Lando Norris – 9.5
Norris demonstrated incredible speed at Zandvoort, securing pole position with a gap of over 0.3 seconds ahead of Verstappen. On race day, he maintained his fierce pace, leading the grand prix to achieve his second career win. His performance was notably superior to that of his teammate, Piastri. However, he narrowly missed a perfect score due to yet another subpar start.
Max Verstappen – 9
At the Dutch Grand Prix, Red Bull clearly had the second-fastest car, so it's difficult to find fault with Verstappen's performance in his home race. He maximized the potential of the RB20 during a challenging weekend for the team.
Charles Leclerc – 9.5
Leclerc delivered an outstanding performance this weekend. Although he was 0.9 seconds behind the pole position in qualifying, a podium finish seemed out of reach for Ferrari. However, Leclerc executed a flawless race, securing an unexpected spot in the top three.
Oscar Piastri – 6.5
Piastri had a disappointing weekend compared to his teammate Norris. Considering McLaren's speed at the Zandvoort circuit, the team should have secured the top two positions.
Carlos Sainz – 7.5
Despite being eliminated in Q2, Sainz managed to bounce back and secure a fifth-place finish. Although Leclerc was distinctly ahead, Sainz crossed the finish line just seven seconds behind, showing a commendable recovery.
Sergio Perez – 7
Considering Perez's recent performances, the Dutch Grand Prix was a decent outing. He secured a spot within the top five during qualifying and ended the race in sixth place. It wasn't outstanding, but it marked an improvement compared to his recent results.
George Russell – 8.5
Russell remains impressive in Saturday sessions, securing fourth place on the grid for Mercedes. Nevertheless, significant tyre wear and an atypical two-stop strategy limited him to a seventh-place finish at Zandvoort.
Lewis Hamilton – 7
Hamilton had a standard 2024 weekend in the Netherlands, with a subpar qualifying session but impressive speed during the race.
Pierre Gasly – 9.5
Possibly the standout performer of the weekend. Gasly advanced to Q3, unlike his teammate Ocon who was eliminated, and he also finished ahead of the other midfield competitors. It was an excellent weekend for the Frenchman.
Fernando Alonso – 8
It was another challenging weekend for Aston Martin, as they seem to be solidly in the middle of the F1 grid at this point. Despite this, Alonso managed to secure a single point following an impressive performance in Q3.
Nico Hulkenberg – 7.5
Hulkenberg was performing strongly within the points but was eventually overtaken by Gasly and Alonso towards the end. He managed to slightly outqualify his teammate Magnussen.
Daniel Ricciardo – 7
Despite struggling in the qualifiers, Ricciardo managed to perform well during the race, securing 12th place. It seems that Red Bull gave him a more advantageous strategy compared to Tsunoda.
Lance Stroll – 6.5
Lagged behind Alonso throughout the weekend, falling out of the points standings despite beginning the race in a favorable position.
Alex Albon – 7.5
Albon's remarkable performance in qualifying was overshadowed by a technical violation, leading to his disqualification from the results. Starting from the back of the grid, he faced an insurmountable challenge in earning points.
Esteban Ocon – 6.5
At Zandvoort, Ocon was significantly outperformed by his teammate Gasly. The French driver suspected an issue with his car during qualifying, which led to his elimination in Q1.
Logan Sargeant – 6
Sargeant faced another challenging weekend as a crash during the third practice session prevented him from participating in qualifying. Despite this setback, he managed to perform reasonably well in the race, capitalizing on a one-stop strategy to finish in front of several competitors in the midfield.
Yuki Tsunoda – 7
Tsunoda showcased strong performance in the qualifying round, but his race strategy faltered when he opted for a two-stop approach. Despite his efforts, VCARB lacked the speed necessary to secure points in this race.
Kevin Magnussen – 6.5
Magnussen faced an immediate setback when he was forced to begin the race from the pit lane because of a change in his car's engine parts. Despite his determined effort, which appeared to be aimed at assisting his teammate Hulkenberg, it ultimately fell short for the Haas team.
Valtteri Bottas – 7
Bottas delivered another strong performance this weekend, significantly outperforming his teammate Zhou by securing a qualifying time more than a second faster. Additionally, he maintained a 30-second lead over Zhou during the race.
Zhou Guanyu – 5.5
Zhou's poor performance persists. He shows no speed and is consistently outperformed by Bottas.
