Sir Keir Starmer has stated that his administration aims for a fresh start with the European Union, clarifying that this does not include overturning Brexit or rejoining the single market.
After discussions in Berlin with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the prime minister announced that the proposed treaty with Germany represents a "reset" in relations with the EU.
He expressed his desire for a broader recalibration in relations with the group, clarifying, however, "This does not imply overturning Brexit or rejoining the single market or customs union."
"This indicates a strengthened partnership across various sectors such as the economy, defense, and exchanges. However, we currently have no plans to implement a youth mobility program."

Sir Keir has traveled to Germany to negotiate a comprehensive bilateral agreement that addresses various subjects such as market access, clean energy initiatives, trade, and combatting unlawful migration.
Mr. Scholz and Sir Keir expressed their hope for a deal to be finalized by year’s end, describing it as a "once in a generation" opportunity.
They shared limited information on the potential form of the agreement.
Sir Keir stated, "Britain is far more capable of forwarding its interests when we collaborate with allies and associates."
"This agreement marks a broader initiative, based on renewed collaboration and a mutual recognition that its development will progress swiftly, with an aim to finalize it by year's end."
Unauthorized immigration and security collaboration
The prime minister announced that the two nations have decided to create a collaborative strategy to combat unauthorized immigration, enhancing their cooperation on matters such as sharing data and intelligence.
Sir Keir mentioned that his "meaningful conversations" with Mr. Scholz would aid in dismantling the criminal networks responsible for the "despicable business of placing individuals in perilous circumstances throughout Europe and the Channel".
They also discussed a new defense pact, which Sir Keir noted would enhance the "already formidable" collaboration between the two nations.

The duo did not disclose the specifics of the defense pact, but mentioned that it starts with their unwavering support for Ukraine. They noted that the UK and Germany are the biggest European supporters of Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
Sir Keir emphasized that there is consensus between the two nations on various Middle Eastern concerns, specifically: "Israel's entitlement to defend itself while adhering to international humanitarian standards, the urgency of reducing tensions throughout the area, and the necessity for measured and prudent actions. There's also accord on allowing unimpeded humanitarian entry into Gaza, support for a ceasefire and the liberation of all captives, along with the significance of collaboratively pursuing a political resolution that advocates for the establishment of a Palestinian state and supports the Palestinian people."

When questioned about whether the two leaders would collaborate on simplifying visa procedures for Germans and Britons under 30, Sir Keir indicated that there were currently no such plans.
He stated, "However, we are planning for a more intimate partnership with the EU as an element of that extensive arrangement."
"Thus, the situation remains the same as it was prior to the vote."
"Today, we've made progress by advancing the bilateral treaty agreement. We also reaffirmed our commitment to renew our relations with the EU."
Shadow Business Secretary Kevin Hollinrake argued that instead of making progress on Brexit, the Prime Minister is backtracking.
He stated: "Shortly after taking office, Labour's minister responsible for European Union affairs declared that Brexit had 'damaged' the UK's global standing. Currently, Keir Starmer is engaging with German officials and advocating for a strengthened bond with Europe.
Throughout his political life, Starmer has consistently aimed to undo Brexit, making it quite clear what direction a new Labour government would likely take.
