Small Glitch Costs Lando Norris Victory at Hungarian Grand Prix, but McLaren Celebrates 1-2 Finish
Lando Norris encountered a "minor issue" that influenced his start at the Hungarian Grand Prix, according to McLaren.
McLaren disclosed that a minor issue during the acceleration phase affected Lando Norris’ start in the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Norris, who began the race from the front of the grid, lost his leading position at the Hungaroring.
The British racer was overtaken by his teammate Oscar Piastri, and then Max Verstappen passed him from the outside, although he went off the track to do so.
Norris' slow beginning was the main factor that led to his defeat by Piastri in Hungary.
In a review posted on their official website, McLaren clarified that Norris' car experienced a malfunction in second gear while starting.
They reported: "Lando encountered a minor issue getting into second gear while accelerating from the pole position, making for a less-than-perfect start to the race."
“This enabled Verstappen to draft beside on his left, taking the outside line through the first turn.”
McLaren managed to secure both first and second places, marking their first 1-2 finish since the Italian Grand Prix in 2021.
This places them only 51 points behind Red Bull in the constructors' championship as they approach the Spa-Francorchamps event this weekend.
McLaren has not secured the constructors' championship since 1999, but with Sergio Perez of Red Bull currently facing performance issues, the Woking-based team might have a chance this year.
Looking forward to this weekend in Belgium, Piastri believes that McLaren is now capable of performing well at the front on any kind of track.
During the FIA press conference on Sunday, he expressed confidence by saying, "I believe so. This year, we've demonstrated our ability to be fast on any track and in any condition."
“We are consistently present at the forefront. Although Spa hasn't been the most favorable location for us in recent times, I am optimistic about our chances of performing well.”
“Our vehicle has turned into a versatile performer, so I feel extremely assured, and I believe the rest of the team should share this confidence.”
