Sir Keir Starmer is traveling to the Republic of Ireland to refresh ties in the wake of the recent governmental shift.
The prime minister held a meeting with Simon Harris, his counterpart from Ireland, during his trip to Dublin.
UK Government's Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn is set to declare a "new chapter" in the relationship between the UK and Ireland during his address at the British-Irish Association Conference in Oxfordshire.
Northern Ireland's top official, Michelle O'Neill, along with deputy leader Emma Little-Pengelly, and the Republic of Ireland's vice premier Micheal Martin, are set to attend the conference.
In his forthcoming speech, Mr. Benn is expected to recognize the significant distress and outrage sparked by the Conservative government’s contentious Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023. This legislation halted the initiation of new cases and inquests into killings from the Troubles period and proposed a conditional amnesty for suspects.
The Labour Party has pledged to revoke the statute, yet Mr. Benn is advocating for the enhancement of an autonomous body established by the law to ascertain facts. He suggests that this organization should collaborate with the police in the Republic of Ireland on historical inquiries.
