Shanghai Recovers: Typhoon Bebinca Leaves Trail of Disruption in Financial Mega-City
Shanghai cleans up after Typhoon Bebinca hits Jiangsu province in eastern China
The financial center, home to 25 million, battered by the most intense tropical cyclone the city has seen since 1949
The city's primary airports, Pudong and Hongqiao, reopened after the eye of the typhoon passed Shanghai around midday. The initial flights touched down at both airports just before and just after 2 p.m., with departures set to begin after 3 p.m.
In Shanghai, some subway services resumed operation starting at 2pm, with rainfall anticipated to persist into the evening.
Emergency services, including the police, are responding to flood conditions in various regions and managing over 10,000 trees that have either fallen or sustained damage.
The fire and rescue service in Shanghai reported that the typhoon had not caused any fatalities. By midday, they had responded to approximately 8,500 calls, primarily to deal with hazardous items in elevated areas and to remove fallen trees and other obstructions from the roads.
In the neighboring city of Zhoushan in Zhejiang province, authorities including police and firefighters have been actively dismantling billboards and security window bars that pose a falling hazard, reports Shanghai-based digital news source The Paper.
