**Sergio Perez Handed Three-Place Grid Penalty for Unsafe Car Maneuver in Canadian GP**
Sergio Perez faces a grid penalty at the Spanish Grand Prix for attempting to steer clear of the Safety Car. Perez has been penalized with a three-place grid drop for operating his vehicle in an 'unsafe condition' during the Canadian Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez has been penalized with a three-position grid drop for the upcoming F1 race due to operating his Red Bull vehicle in a hazardous state in an attempt to prevent the deployment of a Safety Car during the Canadian Grand Prix.
During Sunday's chaotic and rainy race in Montreal, the Mexican driver lost control on Lap 51. He managed to limp back to the pits with his rear wing barely attached, ultimately retiring from the race.
Perez came under scrutiny for the incident, and authorities concluded that he "did not exit the track despite facing major mechanical issues after causing substantial harm to the rear wing," which is a violation of Article 26.10 of the FIA's F1 Sporting Regulations.
Consequently, Perez will face a three-position grid penalty at the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona this month.
Red Bull acknowledged to the stewards that their intention was to prevent a Safety Car situation, as Max Verstappen, Perez's teammate, was in the lead at that moment. Consequently, the team has been penalized with a €25,000 fine.
"The Stewards stated that they had discussions with Sergio Perez, the driver of Car 11, and a team representative. They also examined video footage, team radio communications, and in-car video evidence."
"Following a collision with the barriers at Turn 6, the driver proceeded to complete the lap despite the car being heavily damaged, shedding multiple carbon fibre components en route to the pits. During the hearing, the team explained that the driver was instructed to return to the pits to prevent the deployment of a Safety Car."
The Stewards have decided that, in addition to a monetary fine for the team, a penalty affecting the sport is also required because of the safety risks involved in the incident. This penalty is being enforced in accordance with previous similar cases.
