Sergio Perez Faces Uncertain Future with Red Bull After Disappointing Belgian GP
Could the Belgian Grand Prix be Sergio Perez's final race with Red Bull? He describes the event as "disappointing."
Sergio Perez faces questions about his future following the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez acknowledged that his performance in the F1 Belgian Grand Prix, potentially his last race with Red Bull, was "disappointing".
Helmut Marko from Red Bull stated that the team will meet on Monday, marking the beginning of the F1 summer break, and the issue of Perez's suitability to remain with the team will definitely come up for discussion.
On Saturday, he performed exceptionally well and secured a front-row start, benefitting from Max Verstappen's grid penalty. However, his success dwindled on Sunday at Spa, where he fell to an eighth-place finish. He was subsequently promoted to seventh place following George Russell's disqualification.
Verstappen, who began the race in 11th place, managed to finish in fifth position, which was later adjusted to fourth.
After the Belgian Grand Prix, Perez shared his thoughts with Crash.net in the paddock, saying, “It was a solid qualifying session and overall a good day.”
He emphasized that his position in Red Bull remains unaffected.
“There’s a lot happening within the team right now, and we have many priorities to address. We can’t afford to waste energy on all these rumors and conjectures.
"This will be the final occasion I discuss the future. To ensure everyone understands, I will no longer address any inquiries or make any statements regarding what's to come."
Perez deflected a follow-up inquiry regarding potential dismissal by Red Bull halfway through the season.
He commented on Red Bull's underwhelming performances over the last two weekends, stating, "There are numerous aspects that require our analysis."
"However, I found Mercedes to be quite remarkable. We also struggled to keep up with the Ferraris, which means we have a lot to figure out."
Perez commented on his performance at Spa on Sunday, stating, "The race was highly disappointing. Although, I must admit, it began positively."
"I encountered significant difficulties on the straight sections. I'm unsure of the cause, but I had to conserve battery power during the initial laps."
"I didn't have much power on the straights. After I got past that, I caught up to the group and was able to keep up with Lewis and Charles, maintaining my position."
"However, during the second phase, switching to the fresh tires with all the cars trailing behind, it became extremely challenging and complex."
"We had a rather brief run, and it seemed like we were out of rhythm. Our handling of the tyres wasn't great today. The balance was off too, so there's a lot for us to review."
He mentioned, “Having only two sets of medium tires clearly put us at a disadvantage.”
"Once more, I believe our strategy during the event wasn't flawless. This is an issue we will address collectively as a team."
