Sergio Perez Dismisses Contract Speculation and Vows to Stay with Red Bull Amid Performance Concerns
Sergio Perez asserts his continued presence in F1 by stating, "I will definitely be back next year." He emphasized his commitment by saying, "My focus is entirely on performing at my best. I will be here next year, and that remains unchanged."
Sergio Perez has denied rumors about a performance clause in his contract that might enable Red Bull to terminate his agreement during the F1 summer break.
Sources indicate that Red Bull may invoke a provision in Perez’s recent Formula 1 contract. This clause allows the team to replace him if his points deficit to Max Verstappen exceeds 100 by the summer break. Presently, the gap stands at 137 points.
Liam Lawson participated in a test session for Red Bull last week, whereas Yuki Tsunoda has openly expressed his eagerness for a promotion.
Perez's unexpected decline in performance has put Red Bull at risk in the battle for the F1 constructors' championship, especially as McLaren has been achieving remarkable results, despite not capitalizing fully on their opportunities to win.
In a statement before the Hungarian Grand Prix, with Crash.net present in the paddock, Perez addressed the speculation that the summer break might serve as a potential deadline.
"There is no connection to that," he stated. "I can't discuss my contract, obviously. What I meant was that the upcoming two races are crucial for me. I want to start my vacation on a positive note, and I believe it's beneficial for my team to maintain a good morale."
"I wasn't referring to anything else. My complete attention is on delivering my best. I'll be here this year and next year without any changes. I'm wholeheartedly dedicated to my own goals."
In the past six races, Perez has only accumulated 15 points, which is less than the points scored by Nico Hulkenberg from the Haas team.
The Mexican's concerning performances have been a pattern over the past two seasons, where he began the year on a high note but faltered during the European segment of the campaign.
Perez has promised to make a comeback, emphasizing that his performance in Abu Dhabi is crucial.
"To start, I haven't been giving my best performance," he mentioned. "In challenging situations, I haven't been at 100%. I take a lot of responsibility for that."
"Clearly, various situations and types of races have played a role, so I believe it's a combination of factors that contribute to this ongoing cycle."
We had an excellent performance on Friday, but I made a mistake during the qualifying session at Silverstone. Regarding our strategy at Silverstone, we took a gamble, hoping for the best, but unfortunately, it didn’t yield the desired results.
"The key point is that I've been in this industry for a long time, and I understand that what truly counts is my final standing in Abu Dhabi. So, let's navigate the ups and downs and aim to return to top performance shortly."
Perez acknowledged that it's been challenging to ignore outside distractions, admitting that driving for a leading team like Red Bull naturally comes with increased pressure and closer examination.
He stated: "Blocking out external distractions is challenging, but ultimately, I aim to give my absolute best and maximum effort. Whether I'm here, training at home, or working on the simulator, I concentrate on what truly matters."
"Ultimately, the commotion seems much louder when you’re with Red Bull. However, that’s what makes this challenge so exciting."
"I chose to renew my contract with this team because I thrive on challenges. It's incredibly demanding, but it pushes me to my limits, and that's why I wanted to stay."
