Sergio Perez Claps Back at Critics After Stellar Qualifying Performance: ‘It’s Not Like I Forgot How to Drive
"Sergio Perez hits back at detractors, dismissing suggestions of his recent Formula 1 form slump"
Sergio Perez responds to criticism by stating "it's not as if I've lost my driving skills," following his strongest qualifying performance since April.
Sergio Perez responded to F1 skeptics who questioned his abilities amid recent challenges, asserting, "it's not as if I've lost my driving skills."
Facing challenges to secure his position with Red Bull, the driver from Mexico achieved his top qualifying performance since the April Chinese Grand Prix, clocking in as the third quickest during the rain-affected Saturday qualifying round at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Perez is set to begin Sunday's race in the second position on the grid at Spa-Francorchamps, as his teammate Max Verstappen falls to 11th after receiving a penalty for going over the season's power unit allocation limit.
In response to whether his recent qualifying success brought him contentment despite facing criticism, Perez stated, "In my opinion, it doesn't alter anything."
"I've consistently maintained that our current position isn't as important as navigating the challenges and our final standing in Abu Dhabi. Several drivers have struggled to fully exploit their performance potential."
"Clearly, the level of inspection directed at me has been significantly more intense. However, from my perspective, nothing alters. I see tomorrow as a fresh start, a new chance. The sentiment would remain unchanged even if I had been eliminated in Q2."
"Tomorrow presents a fresh chance to improve, and that's my perspective. What truly matters is what happens tomorrow. If tomorrow's race doesn't go well for me, I'll aim for a better performance in Zandvoort. That's just the way things are.
"In this sport, outcomes can sometimes favor you, while at other times, you might struggle and feel as though everything is against you. I believe that's simply part of the game's essence."
When questioned about the resurgence of his self-assurance, Perez responded, "It's beyond confidence. It's not as if I lost my driving skills, from five or six races back.
"Often, many drivers experience a situation where they can't fully tap into their car's capabilities. This, in turn, leads to a decrease in confidence when it comes to getting the most out of the vehicle they're driving."
"I believe we've made significant progress since the Hungary race. The season is shaping up well, starting with a promising Friday at Silverstone. The car seems to be improving, and I'm optimistic about securing a solid result tomorrow. There's still much of the season left, so we have a long journey ahead."
"Simply put, as I've mentioned previously, both the team and I are zeroing in on our strategy. Ultimately, our goal is to secure the highest number of points possible, and beyond that, frankly, it doesn't concern us."
Perez emphasized his dissatisfaction with how his car was performing at the weekend's outset.
"We experimented with numerous approaches, consistently attempting various strategies, and it's always problematic when there's no advancement. Once more today, we applied many different tactics," he detailed.
"We discovered a better window, somewhat akin to what we'd find in Hungary. However, our satisfaction with the car was significantly higher. So, I believe, despite it being under intermediate conditions, the balance at medium-high speed felt promising, moving in the correct direction."
"Alright, let's wait and watch what unfolds tomorrow. I believe tomorrow will bring a change. We'll discover how significantly we can enhance things."
