Scorching Conditions at Monza: Hamilton Compares Overheating Mercedes to ‘Sitting in a Sauna with No Shorts On
Lewis Hamilton compares the extreme heat inside the Mercedes F1 car to the discomfort of being in a sauna without any clothes. "It was extremely hot, like the sensation of sitting in a sauna without wearing shorts," he remarked.
Lewis Hamilton has provided insights into the overheating problems that both he and his Mercedes F1 teammate George Russell experienced during practice for the Italian Grand Prix.
The temperatures at Monza were scorching, exceeding 30 degrees.
This created challenges for the drivers, especially for the Mercedes pair.
Hamilton mentioned that the seat in his cockpit was "very hot," but it did not prevent him from achieving the quickest time during the second practice session at Monza.
Following the session, Hamilton remarked that it felt "extremely hot" and humorously likened the experience to being in a sauna.
“It was unbearably hot inside our vehicle,” he mentioned. “I’m not entirely certain about the reason, but it seemed like there might have been some hot air escaping near the radiator.”
"The heat was intense, comparable to the discomfort of being in a sauna without any clothing."
Hamilton expressed optimism about the speed of the Mercedes W15, noting that it was a positive day and that the car's performance improved as time went on.
“It was a positive day overall,” he mentioned. “I felt generally well. The new asphalt presented some challenges, along with the updated curbs. However, the car performed well right from the beginning.”
“During the first practice session, many experienced significant tire wear, ourselves included. We implemented beneficial adjustments during the interval. The car's performance improved in the following session, though there are still certain aspects that need further refinement.”
The seven-time world champion cautioned Mercedes against making significant changes to the car's setup following a successful Friday.
"I'm in good spirits," he stated. "The efforts we put in this evening and the practice we do in the simulator will be crucial."
"We must be very cautious with the setup to avoid making the car unstable, as we've experienced before."
Hamilton's most recent victory at the Italian Grand Prix was in 2018 while driving for Mercedes
