In a blog entry dated January 21, 2009, she mentioned: "I had the privilege of accompanying Sheikh Hasina in her vehicle on the day of the election.

"The incoming prime minister, who was a candidate for the position at that time, traveled to various electoral districts in Dhaka, making brief stops in each to either meet with the local parliamentary candidates or address the electorate."

She recounted her experience of photographing election day from her aunt's car, stating, "All the pictures I took can be seen here… Sorry if some of them didn't turn out great. It's quite challenging to snap good shots from inside the car!"

Additionally, there's an image of Dhaka Central Jail featured. I captured this image as Sheikh Hasina shared with me that throughout much of her early years, this jail served almost like a second home to her, due to her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, being incarcerated there for an extended period.

Today, members of parliament are set to discuss a legislative amendment initiated by a grieving mother, who suspects that social media platforms might contain important evidence related to her son's demise.

In April 2022, 14-year-old Jools Sweeney was discovered unconscious in his residence.

According to those close to him, including family and friends who interacted with him earlier that day, there were no indications that he was feeling

The coroner determined that his death was self-inflicted; however, it is likely that he did not do so with the intention to end his life, as there was no definitive evidence of his suicidal mindset.

Ellen Roome, his mother, believes he might have participated in a digital dare.

She reports that for the past two years, she has struggled to gain entry to his social media profiles, claiming that the technology firms have significantly obstructed the process.

Her proposal, which enables grieving parents or guardians to review their child’s complete social media activity, garnered 126,000 signatures under the name Jools Law and is scheduled for a parliamentary debate soon.

48-year-old Ms. Roome from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, is concerned that her son's death may have been the result of participating in a dangerous internet challenge.

The authorities failed to collect forensic evidence from his mobile device.

Ellen, assisted by her son's friends, managed to unlock his phone and gain entry to several of his accounts, although some content had already been erased.

She claims that the technology firms have not provided her with complete access to the content Jools viewed before his passing.

"I've consistently maintained that I'm unsure if it's social media, though I've always felt that way instinctively, and I'm just trying to find out – it seems to be the crucial missing part," she stated.

"He tackled numerous difficult tasks, such as attempting to don a t-shirt while balancing on his hands upside down. I perceived them as entertaining, trendy challenges, unaware of the riskier ones he also took on."

The authorities did not request information from social media platforms. Additionally, the investigator was unaware that he possessed multiple accounts on both TikTok and Instagram.

She claims that the social media firms have not provided her with all of his messages and internet activity records.

"They might declare, 'this is it, may you find some clarity'. They might obscure the specifics regarding other children."

Jools passed away just seven days following the death of Archie Battersbee, a 12-year-old from Southend-on-Sea, Essex, who suffered brain damage due to what was determined by a coroner to be an internet challenge gone wrong.

Sky News reached out to Meta, the parent company of Instagram, along with TikTok and Snapchat for comments. Although none of the companies gave an official statement, it is believed that they have communicated with Ms. Roome.

Police providing assistance to family

A representative from Gloucestershire Constabulary stated that their ability to make inquiries was restricted as the matter did not involve a criminal investigation.

"It's unimaginable how distressing it must be for the family to remain without answers following Jools' tragic suicide.

We assisted the Sweeney family and the coroner's office during the inquiry into the reasons behind his passing.

In the investigation, authorities examined Jools's phone and scrutinized a TikTok account manually. However, these efforts did not yield any information that could help answer their questions.

Law enforcement faces restrictions on the investigative methods available to access personal social media profiles managed by private entities due to legal constraints. The current laws require the offense under investigation to be indictable to warrant a production order. In this instance, since the offense does not meet these criteria, there is no legal foundation to request such an order.

"Unfortunately, this does little to provide Jools' family with the closure they seek, and we remain committed to assisting them in their efforts to access his social media profiles."

Last year, a spokesperson from TikTok met with Ms. Roome and discussed that regulations mandate the removal of individuals' personal information by companies, except when there is a law enforcement demand for it.

'I hope no other family has to endure what we have.'

In April 2024, legislation was enacted granting coroners the authority to demand the presentation of evidence from social media platforms. By that time, the inquest into Jools's death had already concluded.

Ms. Roome is organizing a legal challenge to be heard in the High Court in hopes of securing a new inquest and is raising £86,000 through crowdfunding to cover the expenses involved in seeking the truth.

The administration has replied to Ms. Roome's petition, stating that technology firms ought to handle inquiries from grieving parents with compassion and clarity.

A forthcoming Digital Information and Data Bill set to be enacted this year will require social media platforms to preserve information in instances where a child has passed away, allowing coroners to access this data.

However, Ms. Roome is concerned that it wouldn't obligate coroners and police to seek out the information.

"She expressed her wish that no other family should endure what she has faced in the two-and-a-half years since her son passed away. 'It should be automatic,' she stated."

Merry Varney, a partner at Leigh Day and the attorney representing her, also served as counsel for Molly Russell's family, who battled for several months to view her online activity.

Ms. Varney informed Sky News, "It's extremely challenging to obtain that information as it constantly changes. The owners of the content have the power to either remove it or make it private."

Social media platforms often adopt the stance that 'it's not our problem, it's not our duty', creating a difficult situation that simply isn't fair.

"Social media and tech companies often express a desire to assist and to appear responsible. However, do they openly acknowledge their shortcomings? They do not."

Prior to contracting the illness, his daily routine as a mail carrier included walking several miles. Currently, he struggles to walk even a short distance.

"I continue to have difficulty walking long distances and managing my household chores, requiring assistance for tasks like laundry and cleaning that I'm unable to perform myself," he explained.

Kanak's battle extends beyond the physical realm. The lingering effects of long COVID have induced anxiety that makes it difficult for him to interact in public settings.
