**”Russell Reflects on Costly Errors as Mercedes Misses Victory Shot in Canada”**
George Russell acknowledged that making several critical errors might have deprived Mercedes of a potential win in Canada.
George Russell acknowledged that "a few errors" prevented him and the Mercedes team from possibly securing a victory at the F1 Canadian Grand Prix.
The Mercedes driver began the race in pole position and initially maintained the lead. However, several errors and a crash involving McLaren's Oscar Piastri ultimately resulted in him finishing third, behind Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
It was Mercedes' top performance of the season, yet Russell felt that the team let a chance slip away in Montreal.
During the interviews in parc ferme, Russell expressed that it felt like an opportunity that had slipped away.
"We started the race very fast on intermediate tires, but then Lando quickly overtook us. After switching back to slick tires, we made a few errors while pushing the boundaries, which ultimately cost us."
Russell made his first significant mistake on Lap 51 by veering off course at the Turn 8 chicane. This error enabled Norris to overtake him, reclaiming the position he had lost to Russell on the previous lap.
Russell was pushed onto the run-off zone after a daring move to overtake Piastri led to a collision at the last chicane.
Russell slipped to fourth place behind his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, but he fought his way back to the podium with an impressive move into the same corner during the second-to-last lap.
"We were quick," he stated. "Max was performing exceptionally well during that phase of the race. However, once we switched to the medium tires towards the end, our speed significantly increased."
"I believe that the error I made while attempting to overtake Oscar, which caused me to lose a position to Lewis, cost us at least a second-place finish and possibly a chance to compete with Max later in the race."
"However, we'll focus on the positives from this weekend. We achieved our first podium and first pole position of the year, and we're enthusiastic about what lies ahead."
During the post-race press conference, Russell remarked, "Honestly, if someone had told us before the weekend that we would secure pole position and P3, we might not have believed it."
"The race was incredibly challenging for everyone. A tiny misstep could send you off track. Unfortunately, I made a few critical errors at crucial times, which ultimately prevented us from competing with the front runners towards the end."
