Rising Star Kimi Antonelli’s F1 Debut: Brundle’s Mixed Verdict and Wolff’s Unwavering Support
Martin Brundle describes Kimi Antonelli as "fortunate" while acknowledging an "admirable" quality
The involvement of Toto Wolff in Kimi Antonelli's ascent is evaluated
Martin Brundle has shared his opinion on Kimi Antonelli's initial Formula 1 outing with Mercedes.
Antonelli experienced a crash mere moments after FP1 commenced on Friday, marking a terrible beginning for the young driver poised to take over from Lewis Hamilton as Mercedes' next star in the upcoming season.
Toto Wolff responded to Antonelli's accident by affirming his unwavering belief in the young talent, despite being only 18 years old.
"Brundle from Sky Sports mentioned, 'Toto is simply doing what he's able to do – backing his guy.'"
It appears that Max Verstappen won't be joining them. Instead, it looks like they're opting for Antonelli, who is evidently on his way to becoming a major talent.
Their only option is to lessen the impact.
"For many years, Sir Jackie Stewart has often said, 'Puppies are bound to have accidents on the rug!'”
Essentially, that's a paraphrase of Toto's message, though expressed in a more sophisticated manner.
"Antonelli is fortunate to have a supportive team and a boss who have great faith in him and understand his situation well."
"Moving forward and climbing higher. He immediately returned to begin clocking in Formula 2 speeds, which was remarkable."
Following a standard visit to the healthcare facility on Friday due to his crash during the FP1, Antonelli made his way back to the circuit to participate in the Formula 2 qualifying session.
He secured the sixth position in the F2 lineup for the race at Monza this weekend.
'F1 Limelight' caution for Antonelli
Mercedes is anticipated to announce Antonelli as the replacement for Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari.
His debut in Formula 1 is set to mark him as the most anticipated newcomer since Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
"Indeed he is, though it's impossible to be certain until they're in the high-pressure environment of F1, where they're evaluated constantly in every aspect," Brundle remarked.
"It's akin to a blossom's development. At times, the attention helps the blossom reach greater heights, while at other times, it causes them to wither. The outcome is uncertain until they face that circumstance."
Some drivers have shown exceptional talent in karting and junior racing categories, only to fall short of expectations upon reaching Formula 1.
"He's fortunate to be joining a leading team that has a track record of winning grand prix races and potentially clinching championships."
"This implies you avoid spending years at the end of the pack, experiencing all the crashes and intense stress."
